Zelenskyy: Over 150 Chinese Nationals fighting for Russia in Ukraine
April 9, 2025
Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russia of recruiting Chinese citizens to fight against Ukrainian forces, stating that more than 150 individuals with Chinese passports are actively engaged in the conflict. This revelation comes amid heightened tensions between the West and Russia, and adds a complex layer to the already strained relationship between China and Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters in Kyiv, Zelenskyy revealed, “There are 155 peopel with words and passports who are fighting Ukrainians in Ukraine.” He further alleged that Russia is utilizing social media platforms to recruit Chinese nationals for military service.

The Ukrainian President’s statements have sparked international concern. This development raises questions about the extent of foreign involvement in the conflict and the potential implications for global stability. Does this represent a formal endorsement by Beijing? Or is it a more localized recruitment effort autonomous of government approval? These are the questions now being asked by analysts around the world.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry previously stated it’s monitoring the situation in Ukraine and has consistently advised its citizens to avoid conflict zones, urging them to “avoid participating in any side of military operations.” Though, Zelenskyy’s claims suggest that these warnings might potentially be insufficient to deter some Chinese citizens from joining the fighting.
Zelenskyy addressed the issue directly in a post on the social network “X,” sharing a photo he claimed showed captured Chinese fighters.”The first two captured Chinese citizens. Today, investigators from the Security Service of Ukraine spoke with them. We are working to find out all the facts about the involvement of these and other chinese citizens in the Russian occupation army.”

The Ukrainian President emphasized the importance of this alleged Chinese involvement, stating,”We certainly know that the real number is higher.Ukraine believes that such a blatant involvement of Chinese citizens in the war in Ukraine during an aggressive war is a deliberate step towards the expansion of war and another testament to the fact that Moscow simply needs to extend the war.”
He further elaborated on his view of Russia’s strategy: “Russia does not care what is dying in this crazy war, it is indeed only critically important for her to keep the war. All of us – all partners, all honest participants in international relations – must take away the opportunity to continue the war, including through such people.”
The implications of these allegations are far-reaching. If proven true, the presence of Chinese fighters in Ukraine could further complicate diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict. It could also possibly trigger sanctions or other punitive measures from the U.S. and its allies.
This incident also raises concerns about the role of social media in facilitating foreign involvement in armed conflicts. The alleged recruitment of Chinese citizens via social networks underscores the need for increased vigilance and regulation of online platforms to prevent the spread of propaganda and the recruitment of foreign fighters.
