Riven Remake: An Interview with Art Director, Evelyn Hayes

The news of Riven: The Sequel to Myst being remade has sent waves of excitement through the gaming community. We at Archyde had the prospect to speak with Evelyn Hayes, the Art Director at Cyan Worlds, about this enterprising project.

Crafting a Classic: riven Reimagined

archyde: Evelyn, thank you for joining us. The Riven remake is generating considerable buzz. What’s the driving force behind revisiting such an iconic title?

Evelyn Hayes: Thank you for having me! The driving force really comes from two places.Firstly, the love for the original Riven is immense, both within Cyan Worlds and among our fans. Secondly, the technology we have access to now, especially Unreal Engine 5 and VR, allows us to bring Riven’s world to life in a way that simply wasn’t possible in 1997. It’s about giving both longtime players and newcomers a truly immersive and unforgettable experience.

Visual Fidelity and VR Immersion

Archyde: Speaking of Unreal Engine 5, how significantly will the enhanced visuals impact the gameplay and the overall Riven experience?

Evelyn Hayes: The visual upgrade is transformative. We’re meticulously recreating the islands of Riven, paying close attention to the original’s design while adding a layer of detail and realism that’s breathtaking. The enhanced visuals aren’t just about making the game look pretty; they’re about deepening the sense of immersion. For example, the intricate details of the Moiety villages, the shimmering waters, and the foreboding architecture of Gehn’s fortress will all contribute to a richer, more believable world which gives players an organic understanding of the world around them. It will give the players the sense of actually being there.

Archyde: And what about the VR component? How will VR enhance the challenging puzzle-solving core of Riven?

Evelyn Hayes: VR completely changes the dynamic. Imagine standing on the shores of Jungle Island, feeling the scale of the golden dome looming over you, or leaning in to examine the intricate mechanisms of a puzzle box. VR allows players to truly inhabit Riven, observing the environment, exploring every nook and cranny to solve the series of puzzles organically. We believe this level of interactivity will create an entirely new and compelling approach to how players interact with this adventure game.

Staying True to the Original

Archyde: While embracing modern technology, how are you ensuring that the remake remains faithful to the spirit of the original Riven?

Evelyn Hayes: That’s paramount. We’re rebuilding Riven “from the ground up” and have used the original as the blueprint. From the puzzles to the environmental storytelling,we are committed to preserving the essence of what made Riven so special. The core experience remains the same. However, we are also taking the opportunity to refine certain aspects and improve the overall player experience, where that opportunity arises.

The Enduring Legacy of Riven

Archyde: Riven is known for its challenging puzzles. What makes them so compelling, and why do you think they continue to resonate with players today?

Evelyn Hayes: Riven’s puzzles aren’t just about finding the right button or memorizing a sequence. They are deeply integrated into the world. They force you to observe, to experiment, and to truly understand the environment around you. This approach promotes organic finding and a high sense of accomplishment, rewarding players for their inquisitiveness and intellectual investment. That level of intricacy is appealing to many gamers, and is the gold standard for adventure games. We hope to provide that experience of a complex adventure, and provide those challenges to a new crop of gamers.

Archyde: Its undeniable-Riven continues to inspire. What’s one aspect of the remake you’re particularly eager for people to experience?

Evelyn Hayes: For me, it’s witnessing players discover the magic of Riven for the first time, or rediscover it through a new lens. Seeing that sense of wonder and accomplishment experienced by our players is a great reward for the team involved. That is what I aim to capture through this remake.

Archyde: Thank you so much for your time, Evelyn. We eagerly await the release of Riven in 2024!

Evelyn Hayes: It was my pleasure!
