When Christmas Gifts Get Exchanged

When Christmas Gifts Get Exchanged

You can put a lot of thought behind the gift you place under the Christmas tree.

And the recipient can probably look so happy when it is unwrapped.

Even so, you run the risk that the gift will be exchanged at the first opportunity.

One million Danes exchange at least one Christmas present.

Dansk Erhverv investigated Danes’ exchange habits in the run-up to Christmas 2022.

If the patterns repeat themselves, it can be used to predict the habits of this year.

Danes buy Christmas presents for around DKK 8.5 billion, according to Dansk Erhverv.

Between 4 and 5 percent of all gifts are exchanged.

This means that around DKK 400 million worth of Christmas presents are exchanged.

85 percent of those who exchanged Christmas presents from Christmas 2022 did so in a physical store.

Of this, 46 percent spent the money in the same store, while a further 25 percent received a credit certificate.

The options to return

If they didn’t have a receipt for the purchase, those were probably the only two options they had.

Because if you return a gift in order to get the money back, you must often have the receipt with you. Those conditions are determined by the store itself.

If, on the other hand, you have given an electronic gift card as a Christmas present, the recipient can demand that the money be paid out.

In fact, up to a full year after the deadline for the gift card has expired.

However, a fee may be charged for the payment, which is deducted from the amount.

If the gift card is not electronic, the recipient cannot basically demand the money back.

But physical gift cards can also be electronic, if the gift card can be read electronically – for example via barcode or entry online.

The most exchanged gift type

When you buy Christmas presents, you must avoid clothing stores – if you want to avoid the likelihood that the gift will be exchanged.

Because clothes are, with lengths, the type of gift that is exchanged the most. 47 percent answered in Dansk Erhverv’s survey that they had exchanged a gift of clothes.

The year before, the number was 46 percent. Again with a great distance to number two on the list.

– Clothing must be expected to put a large distance to the other categories, especially because it is a popular gift, and it can be difficult to find gifts that hit the right size, says the survey.

In the following places come home accessories with 18 percent and personal care with 12 percent.

## Returning Those Unwanted ⁢Gifts: A Holiday Chat

**Host:** Welcome back to the show. Today we’re exploring the interesting topic‍ of holiday gift exchanges and returns. Joining me is [Alex Reed Name and Title, e.g., Dr. Consumer Behavior Expert, Smith from the Institute of Retail Studies].

Welcome!

**Alex Reed:** Thank you⁣ for having me!

**Host:** ⁣

Atlassed to ‌recent‌ data [[1](https://www.nordjyske.dk/nyheder/københavn/i-danmark-bytter-millioner-af-gaver-i-jul/740c02e7-fc40-404b-a862-da4e768912d9)], it seems like quite a lot of Danes are ‌exchanging their holiday gifts. Can you tell us about this trend?

**Alex Reed:**

It’s interesting to ⁤see that around 4-5% of all Christmas gifts in Denmark are exchanged, amounting to approximately DKK 400 ⁤million in ⁣value. That’s a significant figure!

While gift giving is meant to be a ‍gesture of thoughtfulness, it’s understandable why‍ some gifts might not always land right.

**Host:**

Especially if the giver doesn’t know the recipient’s tastes perfectly. So, what options do people have⁢ when they want to ⁣return or exchange a gift?

**Alex Reed:**

Well, the data suggests that most people prefer ⁢to exchange gifts in physical stores. About 85% chose this method in 2022. This likely provides a sense of tangibility and immediate satisfaction, allowing them to directly select a‌ new item right away.

Within these exchanges, about 46% opted for store credit or a refund, while 25% received a gift certificate.

**Host:**

That raises an interesting point. What about those who don’t have a receipt or might have received a gift from someone who purchased⁣ it elsewhere?

**Alex Reed:**

In those cases, options ‍can be more ⁤limited. Without a ⁣receipt, stores may only offer store credit or an exchange for a similar item, subject to their specific policies.

But we can⁣ certainly discuss further options ‌for‍ navigating ‍these tricky situations in the next segment.

**Host:**

This is a great starting point. We’ll be right back after the break ⁤with more on navigating the complex world of holiday gift returns. Stick ‌with us.
