Thank you for joining us today, Jane D. Lee, former Creative Director at Monolith Productions. You’ve had a unique perspective on the recent changes at Warner Bros.Revelation. Let’s dive right in. Can you share your initial reactions when you heard about the studio closures and the shift in focus to core franchises?

Jane D. Lee

Firstly, thank you for having me. The news was indeed surprising and a bit disappointing, especially for those of us who dedicated years to the projects and teams that are no longer with us. However,it’s not uncommon for businesses to reassess their strategies,especially in challenging economic times.

As for the shift in focus, it’s clear that Warner Bros. Discovery is doubling down on it’s most valuable and recognized IP. This shift doesn’t necessarily mean that innovation will stop, but it might change its nature – we might see more expansions and reimaginings of existing worlds rather than entirely new IPs.

What do you think led to this decision, and how do you see this impacting the gaming industry at large?

I believe several factors contributed to this decision. The gaming industry is facing a significant downturn, with many high-profile games underperforming and the market becoming increasingly saturated. Additionally, there’s a growing demand for interactive experiences tied to established franchises, as seen with the success of games like “Fortnite” and “Among Us”.

As for the industry at large,we might see a trend towards more cautious and calculated investments in big-budget games. Established franchises offer built-in fan bases and brand recognition, reducing the risks for publishers. However, this could also led to a homogenization of gaming experiences if not balanced with support for risky, innovative ideas.

Do you think there’s still room for original IP in this new landscape?

Absolutely. There will always be a place for original IP,as they drive innovation and help keep the industry fresh.However, they might need to come from smaller, more agile studios or through unconventional funding models, like crowdfunding or increased indie support from platforms and publishers.

Moreover, original IP can find success even within established universes. Look at “Hollow Knight” – an original IP that took inspiration from and found success within the genre established by “Dark Souls”.

Looking back at your time at Monolith Productions, what are some of the most memorable projects you’ve worked on and what made them so special?

My time at Monolith was filled with incredible projects, but the one that sticks out the most is “Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor”. Its unique Nemesis System and the way it blended seamlessly with Tolkien’s lore created a truly engaging and immersive experience. It showed that games can be art, and I’m incredibly proud of the team’s work on that project.

Another memorable project was “Gotham Knights”. While its advancement was regrettably cut short, the prospect to explore a different side of the DC universe and create a distinct, darker tone was interesting. It’s a shame we couldn’t see it through to completion.

Lastly, what advice would you give to aspiring game developers and creatives in the gaming industry, given the current climate?

Firstly, stay curious and keep learning. the industry is evolving rapidly, and having a diverse skill set and understanding of various roles can make you more versatile and hired.Also, don’t be afraid to take risks and explore new ideas – that’s where innovation comes from.

Lastly, maintain a healthy work-life balance. the gaming industry can be demanding, and it’s essential to take care of your mental and physical health. Remember, your well-being should always come first, and a healthy developer is a more creative and productive one.
