Towards the end of the set, Muchová required medical attention. “since the second gem, my heart pounded terribly when I was sitting on the bench let me play with it and rather checked it,” she said in a post-match interview.A physiotherapist and doctor assessed her, measuring her blood pressure and oxygen saturation, and listening to her heart.

Karolína Muchová on Overcoming Challenges and Facing Świątek at Indian Wells
Following her tense victory over Kateřina Siniaková at indian Wells, we spoke with Karolína Muchová about her health scare, her mindset during the match, and her upcoming quarterfinal clash against Iga Świątek. Joining us today is Jana Novotná, a tennis analyst for Archyde Sports, to conduct the interview.
The Interview
Jana Novotná: Karolína, congratulations on reaching the quarterfinals at Indian Wells! That was a hard-fought victory against Kateřina Siniaková.Can you describe what was going through your mind when you requested that medical timeout?
Karolína Muchová: Thank you, Jana. It was definitely a challenging match. Honestly, I felt a bit panicked. Since the second game,my heart was pounding heavily when I sat down. It was unsettling, and I wanted to ensure it wasn’t something serious. I appreciate the quick attention from the medical team.
Jana Novotná: That sounds incredibly stressful. You trailed 3-5 in the first set but managed to turn things around. What adjustments did you make to regain control of the match?
Karolína Muchová: I tried to stay focused on each point and not dwell on the health scare. I told myself to breathe and trust my game. I knew if I could just relax a little, I could find my rhythm. It was tough mentally, as I mentioned, I really had an internal battle to handle.Playing good tennis at Indian Wells makes it all worth it!
Jana Novotná: You certainly did! Now, your facing Iga Świątek in the quarterfinals. She’s been dominant, only losing four games so far. What’s your strategy heading into that match, considering she holds a 3-1 head-to-head advantage?
Karolína Muchová: Iga is a fantastic player and a tough opponent. she’s clearly in great form right now. I need to focus on my own game,be aggressive when I see opportunities, and try and dictate the rallies. I know I can’t afford to give her easy points and I need to remain mentally strong from the first point. It’s going to be a massive challenge, but I’m excited for it.
Jana novotná: This will be your fifth career meeting with Iga, and the stakes don’t get much higher. I wanted to ask you, considering her current form dominating the Indian Wells tournament, do you have any mental tactics to deal with facing someone who appears invincible, and How do you maintain your focus on strategic execution when you see that so far, it seems Iga Świątek is unbeatable?
Karolína Muchová: That’s a very insightful question, Jana. I think, first and foremost, I have to accept that Iga *is* a top player playing at an incredibly high level. Acknowledging that helps me adjust my expectations. But I also need to remind myself that nobody is truly invincible. My mental tactic is to focus on what *I* can control: my planning, my effort, and my execution of my game plan.I will analyze her previous matches at the indian Wells and look for possible errors, patterns,or times when she has been a bit hesitant on the court. It’s about dissecting the match into smaller, manageable pieces. And, finally but most important than anything, I need to trust in my abilities and know that I can push her, nonetheless of how she plays.Iga knows that I will be a great competitor and prepare well to play my best tennis.
Jana Novotná: Karolína, thank you for sharing your insights with us. We wish you the best of luck against Iga Świątek in the quarterfinals!
Karolína Muchová: Thank you, Jana. I appreciate it!
