Verstappen Penalty Sparks Controversy: Button Questions FIA Consistency

Verstappen Penalized After Qualifying Sparking Controversy in Qatar

The 2023 Qatar Grand Prix will be remembered for much more than just the race itself – a controversial penalty handed to Max Verstappen during qualifying ignited fierce debate within the F1 community. The incident left many, including former world champion Jenson Button, questioning the consistency and fairness of the stewards’ decisions.

For Verstappen and Red Bull, the opening sessions at Lusail International Circuit were frustratingly quiet. They seemed to be struggling to find their pace in the Middle East heat. However, after the sprint race, the tide turned dramatically. Verstappen’s car came alive, and he secured pole position, only to see it snatched away due to a one-position grid penalty for driving unnecessarily slowly during qualifying.

Same Speed, Different Outcomes?

The penalty came after a contentious moment with George Russell. The Mercedes driver, who approached Verstappen on a slow lap, claimed Verstappen was obstructing his path. This prompted the FIA to summon the Dutch driver, resulting in the unusual punishment that saw him lose his pole position to Russell.

Despite starting from second, Verstappen quickly retaliated, overtaking Russell at the first corner. The Dutchman’s clear frustration at the penalty was evident, and he received support from many fans and drivers in Great Britain. Button was amongst those questioning the decision, highlighting what he saw as inconsistencies in the FIA’s application of the rules.

“For me, the problem is that Fernando Alonso was driving in front of him at exactly the same speed,” Button noted on Sky F1. “It’s not like Max suddenly dropped the anchors and hit the brakes in the middle of the circuit in a high-speed corner.”

A Shocking Decision?

Button pointed to telemetry data as evidence: “He kept the same distance to the car in front through turns twelve and thirteen. It’s shocking to me that he got a penalty. It should have been the same as the rest. The same thing happened in sprint qualifying. I’m very surprised that he got a punishment. They shouldn’t give different punishments for the same offense. Why would you give someone a warning for driving too slowly? The rule is that you can’t drive slower than the delta, so why do they give it not an immediate penalty?”

He continued, “Then we wouldn’t have driven slower than the delta, and it all became clear a lot faster,” concludes the 2009 world champion.
