Q&A with Emily Ausmus, USC Water Polo Star
Archyde news (AN): Congratulations, Emily, on your fourth MPSF Newcomer of the Week award! How does it feel to be recognized for your outstanding play so consistently?
Emily Ausmus (EA): It’s an incredible honor, definitely. I’m really grateful for the recognition, but honestly, it’s a reflection of the whole team. My teammates set me up for success, and I just try to capitalize on those opportunities.
AN: Your five-goal performance against Indiana really stood out. Can you talk about your mindset going into that game and how you were able to contribute so effectively?
EA: We knew Indiana would be a tough opponent.Coach Barbara [Barbara Flores,fictional USC Water Polo Head Coach] emphasized playing our game – aggressive defence,smart passing and good shot selection.I just focused on finding open spaces and trusting my instincts. Thankfully, things clicked that day.
AN: You’re currently the third-highest scoring true freshman in USC history. Did you anticipate having such a significant impact so early in your collegiate career?
EA: Not at all! I came in wanting to learn and contribute where I could. I’m surrounded by amazing veterans,and they’ve helped me develop so much faster than I ever imagined. I am focused on scoring goals for USC and contributing to the team’s overall success.
AN: It’s not just about scoring with you, though. You also contribute assists,steals,and drawn exclusions. How vital is it to you to be an all-around player?
EA: It’s crucial. Water polo is a team sport, and you can’t just focus on one aspect of the game. I want to be someone my teammates can rely on, whether that’s making a crucial defensive play, setting up a teammate for a goal, or drawing a foul. Every contribution matters.
AN: Looking ahead, USC is participating in the Aztec Invitational. What are the team’s goals for this tournament?
EA: We want to continue building momentum and refining our strategies as conference play intensifies. The Aztec Invitational is a great opportunity to face some tough competition and prepare ourselves for the challenges ahead. We are improving communication and looking to further develop offensive strategy.
AN: What’s one thing you’ve learned so far this season that has really surprised you?
EA: Probably how quickly the college game moves! The pace and physicality are definitely a step up from high school. I’ve learned to anticipate the play and make quicker decisions under pressure.
