Exclusive Interview: Ella Lloyd on F1 Academy, British F4, and the Future of Women in Motorsport
Archyde News caught up with rising star Ella Lloyd ahead of her exciting 2025 season, where she’ll be competing in both the F1 Academy and the British Formula 4 Championship. Join us as we delve into her ambitions, challenges, and perspectives on the evolving landscape of women in motorsport.
Ella, thanks for joining us. It’s a busy year for you! How are you feeling about tackling both F1 academy and British F4?
Thanks for having me! I’m incredibly excited, and honestly, a little nervous. It’s a big commitment, but I see it as a fantastic prospect.Balancing both championships will be challenging, but the experience I gain across different racing formats will be invaluable. The F1 Academy is all about developing us as drivers on and off the track, and British F4 is super competitive, so it will really push me.
You made a strong impression as a wildcard entrant in Singapore last year in F1 Academy. What did you learn from those races, and how will you apply it this season?
Singapore was an eye-opener. The biggest takeaway was understanding race management and tire conservation under pressure. The F1 Academy cars react differently to temperature changes and driving style, so adapting quickly was crucial. This season, I’ll be focusing on consistently improving my qualifying pace and making smarter decisions during the races.I’ve also been working hard on my physical conditioning to handle the demands of back-to-back races in both series.
The F1 Academy focuses heavily on development workshops covering everything from race strategy to media training. Which aspect do you find most beneficial?
That’s a tough one, as they’re all so vital! But if I had to choose, I’d say the media training aspect. In today’s world, being able to articulate yourself clearly and confidently is vital, not just for representing yourself, but for attracting sponsors and inspiring the next generation of female racers. It’s also about communicating effectively with the team to get the best out of every session.
You secured four podium finishes in British F4 last year. What are yoru goals for this year’s championship?
Stepping onto the podium was an amazing feeling! This year, the goal is to build on that foundation. I want to consistently challenge for wins and aim for a top-three finish in the championship. I know the competition will be fierce, but I’ve been working hard on my driving technique and race craft, and I feel confident that I can take that next step.
What are your thoughts on the increasing visibility and support for women in motorsport, particularly through initiatives like the F1 Academy?
It’s incredibly encouraging. For a long time, motorsport felt like a male-dominated world, but programs like the F1 Academy are changing that perception. We need more women represented at all levels, from engineering to management. Seeing more female drivers on the track is inspiring to young girls and helps them believe that they can achieve their dreams in motorsport too. The support is growing which gives us the opportunity to grow on our skills.
Looking ahead, where do you see yourself in five years? Are there any particular drivers or teams you admire?
In five years, hopefully, I’ll be competing at a very high level, aiming for formula 3 or even Formula 2. ultimately, the dream is Formula 1, but I know that takes immense dedication and a little bit of luck. I really admire Lando Norris for his raw talent and unwavering determination. And I have a lot of respect for the McLaren team as a whole they are such a strong and passionate team.
what advice would you give to young girls who dream of becoming racing drivers?
Don’t be afraid to chase your dreams! Motorsport can be tough, but if you’re passionate and willing to work hard, anything is possible. Start karting early, find a mentor, and never stop learning. And most importantly, believe in yourself.
