Trump Taps Jared Kushner‘s Father for French Ambassador Role
Former president Donald Trump announced on Saturday that he intends to nominate Charles Kushner, the father of his son-in-law Jared Kushner, as the next ambassador to France. Trump made the announcement in a Truth Social post, hailing Charles Kushner as a “tremendous business leader, philanthropist & dealmaker.”
Charles Kushner is best known as the founder of Kushner Companies, a prominent real estate firm. His son, Jared Kushner, works in the field as well. He held the position of senior advisor to President Trump and was married to Ivanka Trump, one of the former president’s daughters.
Charles Kushner, whose past is controversial, received a presidential pardon in December 2020 after pleading guilty in 2005 to charges of tax evasion and making illegal campaign donations. These charges stemmed from a series of intricate financial maneuvers involving illegal donations to, and subsequent prosecution of, a growing number of political candidates. The prosecution ultimately resulted in a guilty plea and a two-year prison sentence.
The case took many twists and turns, including allegations of witness retaliation. Prosecutors claimed Charles Kushner built an elaborate scheme of revenge against his brother-in-law, who was cooperating with authorities. That scheme allegedly involved hiring a prostitute to lure the brother-in-law into a compromising situation, secretly filming the encounter, and then sending the recording to his own sister – the man’s wife.
“Charles Kushner engaged in a wide-ranging scheme to evade taxes and improperly influence a federal election,” said then-U.S. Attorney Chris Christie, who prosecuted the case. Christie, who went on to become the governor of New Jersey and a Republican presidential candidate, has been vocal about the case. He blamed Jared Kushner for his firing from the Trump transition team in 2016 and has called his father-in-law’s actions “one of the most loathsome, disgusting crimes that I prosecuted when I was U.S. attorney.”
Charles Kushner previoulsy served his sentence after pleading guilty to 18 counts that included tax evasion and witness tampering.
Trump and Charles Kushner’s paths had crossed in the world of real estate long before politics intervened. The two grew closer during the 2016 presidential race and ultimately celebrated a unique bond.
Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump were married in 2009.
* Given the history of nepotism in political appointments, how might Jared Kushner’s familial ties to Charles Kushner influence public perception and Senate scrutiny of this nomination?
