MONTREAL – The start of a new year always brings forth various customs, and in Montreal’s port, the Golden-Headed Cane commemoration has endured for over 180 years. In 2022, the Quebec Express vessel secured this honor, its prow first cutting through Sorel’s waters.
Traditionally, the captain of the initial seafaring vessel to traverse the Montreal Port‘s boundary without intermediate stops receives the prestigious golden-headed cane. This year, the Quebec Express arrived in Sorel at 12:21 a.m. on January 1st.
Consequently, Captain Felino D’Souza will be recognized. The Montreal Port Authority (MPA) reports that the Hapag-Lloyd-owned container ship departed Hamburg, Germany, on December 19th.
