St. Petersburg Pours Nearly Half a Million Dollars into a Vibrating Arts Scene
St. Petersburg is doubling down on its commitment to a thriving arts community. City Council members unanimously approved nearly $550,000 in grants for Fiscal Year 2025, a move that celebrates the vital role arts organizations play in enriching the lives of everyone.
The generous funding came after the city’s Arts Advisory Committee, a group of nine local arts advocates, carefully reviewed 38 applications.
Supporting Behind-the-Scenes Success
Erica Sutherlin, artistic executive director of The Studio@620 and chair of the Arts Advisory Committee, emphasized the crucial need to support behind-the-scenes operations.
( “It is the operations that allow the programs to happen. So without that operational support, as much as we love to stand behind the programs, they cannot exist,” she told officials.
This city’s investment comes at a time when support for the arts is particularly vital. After Florida Governor Ron DeSantis vetoed state funding for the arts earlier this year, these grants serve as a bulwark, underscoring St. Petersburg’s unshakable dedication to nurturing creativity.

What specific types of enriching programs and experiences does this funding support?
**Host:** Welcome back to the show. Joining us today is Erica Sutherlin, artistic executive director of The Studio@620 and chair of the Arts Advisory Committee. Erica, thank you for being here.
**Erica Sutherlin:** Thanks for having me.
**Host:** St. Petersburg has just made a significant investment in its arts community, nearly half a million dollars in grants. What does this say about the city’s commitment to the arts?
**Erica Sutherlin:** This investment is a powerful statement. It shows that the city recognizes the vital role that arts organizations play in creating a vibrant and thriving community.
**Host:** There’s been a lot of discussion nationally about funding for the arts. Especially with the recent veto of state funding in Florida. How important is it for cities like St. Petersburg to step up and support local artists and organizations?
**Erica Sutherlin:** It’s absolutely crucial. When state and federal funding is threatened, local support becomes even more essential. These grants are a lifeline for many organizations, allowing them to continue providing enriching programs and experiences for our community.
**Host:** You mentioned enriching programs. This funding isn’t just about putting on big shows, is it?
**Erica Sutherlin:** No, it’s about so much more.
This funding helps support the day-to-day operations that make those programs possible. Things like staff salaries, rent, utilities – the essential elements that often get overlooked. Without this kind of operational support, the incredible art that we see on stage, in galleries, and in our community wouldn’t exist.
