The novel’s exploration of humanity’s relationship with nature, justice, and morality resonated deeply with my artistic sensibilities. I was also drawn to Janina Duszejko, the protagonist, a strong, unconventional woman fighting for her beliefs.

Archyde News Editor: The collaboration between yourself, playwright Matisse Gricman, and actress Chulpan Hamatova is very interesting. How has this collaborative process shaped your interpretation, and what unique elements do they bring to the adaptation?

Ola Mafalani: Collaboration is central to my creative process. Matisse Gricman has expertly distilled the essence of the novel, crafting a narrative that holds the stage without losing Tokarczuk’s complexities. Chulpan Hamatova’s incredible talent and emotional depth bring Janina Duszejko to life in a profound way. The synergy between us has created a multi-layered, living experience.

Archyde News Editor: Given your background and repertoire, which includes Kurt weill’s “seven Sins of Death” and the enterprising nine-hour show “Government,” how do you approach adapting such a complex novel for the stage? Ola Mafalani: My aim is to create an immersive experience. With this production, just like with many of my earlier works, I want to engage the audience emotionally. I am employing visual storytelling with innovative staging and atmospheric elements. Focusing the narrative thru Janina’s perspective, her world views, is key. Also, the use of symbolism is vital to convey the novel’s philosophical depths. It will be dynamic, thought-provoking, a powerful performance, I hope.

How do you hope this production, staged at the daile Theater, a cultural hub in Riga, will resonate with contemporary audiences and possibly spark meaningful dialog within the community?

Ola Mafalani: I believe the play will certainly resonate, particularly with audiences who are increasingly aware of social injustices and environmental concerns. The Daile Theater provides a perfect platform for this kind of dialogue. My hope is that it will challenge viewers to consider their own beliefs and relationship with the world around them, much as Tokarczuk’s work compels us to. We are hoping the theatrical experience will trigger discussions outside the theater, and promote awareness around these issues.

I’m imagining scenes, characters that reflect nature and life, and of course, Janina’s captivating perspective. we are experimenting with visual elements and integrating those to create a unique stage atmosphere that reflects the essence of the book. The atmosphere that is created around the story enhances the story.
