A recent horse race was marked by several incidents affecting the performance
and well-being of participating horses. Stewards and veterinary officials
carefully reviewed these events, addressing potential rule infractions and
ensuring horse welfare. Here’s a breakdown of key occurrences:
Key Incidents and Observations
-
TOP PEAK (H441): This horse,ridden by C L Chau,experienced
bumping after the 500-meter mark. Chau reported that his mount “came
under pressure in the Home Straight” after racing wide. He added that
after “being briefly crowded between MANAPHY and HAPPY SHOOTER near the
200 Metres TOP PEAK failed to finish the race off thereafter.” A
veterinary inspection found “a considerable amount of blood in the horse’s
trachea,” leading to a requirement for an official veterinary examination
before being allowed to race again. -
ETALON OR (J273): Jockey A Badel stated his instructions were “to
take up a forward position but to find cover if possible.” He explained
that after being caught wide early, when “FLYING WROTE did not cross to
the rail he was obliged to race wide and without cover.” Badel further
elaborated on his riding decisions in the Home Straight, noting that
as ETALON OR carried 132 lbs and ran wide,he hesitated to apply
full pressure to soon. Trainer P F Yiu, however, felt Badel could have
“placed pressure on his mount sooner in the Home Straight.” The Stewards
ultimately deemed Badel’s tactics “reasonable in the circumstances.” -
DREAMING WINNER (K046): L Hewitson reported that his mount
“knuckled over [on] jumping,” becoming unbalanced and crowded by VIEW ALL
THINGS. After the event, hewitson stated that his mount,”after being
held up for clear running between the 400 Metres and the 250 Metres his
mount finished the race off in a one-paced manner thereafter.” -
SHAMUS STORM (K031): Before the start, this horse “reared and got
its front legs over the front gates momentarily” and was subsequently
removed and cleared to race. The horse also “bumped with DREAMING WINNER
and became unbalanced” shortly after the start. Jockey A. Atzeni stated
that after “being hampered at the start he was obliged to make use of his
mount in the early stages to hold an on-pace position,” and as a result,
“SHAMUS STORM did not finish the race off in the Home Straight.”
Shamus Storm will need to perform satisfactorily in a stalls test before
racing again. -
MANAPHY (K075): B Shinn’s mount was “steadied when it endeavoured
to obtain a narrow run between HAPPY UNIVERSE and TOP PEAK,” making
contact with TOP PEAK. A veterinary inspection revealed that MANAPHY had
“bled from both nostrils,” requiring a satisfactory barrier trial and
official veterinary examination before future races. -
CARRYON SMILING (J392): This horse “bumped shortly after the start
and became unbalanced.” After the race, Trainer W Y So addressed the
horse’s improved performance. So stated that “at the horse’s last start
it had failed to run out a strong 1600 Metres when it obtained a forward
position from an inside barrier”.He added that following that run, he
sent the horse to his Conghua stable where “it barrier trialed well on 14
February 2025,” leading him to “expect CARRYON SMILING to run reasonably
well today.” So also noted, “he also issued the same instructions today
to Jockey K De Melo as he did to the horse’s rider on 29 December 2024
when the horse ran well when ridden in a conservative manner from the
outside barrier and this, in his opinion, was the principal reason for
the horse’s improvement today.” -
Other notable events: FLYING WROTE (J290) was bumped at the start.
HAPPY SHOOTER (J427) jumped poorly and raced keenly.MAX QUE (J514)
jumped awkwardly and was held up during the race. VIEW ALL THINGS (K101)
shifted in at the start and had difficulty obtaining clear running later
on. EXCEL WONGCHOY (J194) shifted across behind runners in the early
stages.
Veterinary and Regulatory Actions
Following the race, veterinary inspections were conducted on multiple
horses, leading to specific directives to ensure their well-being. Horses
found to have bled or experienced other issues are required to undergo
further examinations and demonstrate their fitness before being cleared to
compete again. These measures underscore the commitment to maintaining high
standards of equine health and safety.
Analyzing Racing Tactics and Steward Decisions

dynamics. The decisions regarding Jockey Badel’s tactics on ETALON OR
demonstrate the careful consideration given to rider choices under varying
circumstances. The acknowledgment of reasonable tactics highlights the
complexity of race-riding and the need for nuanced judgment. Understanding
these decisions can provide valuable insights into racing strategies and
the factors influencing race outcomes.
These racing incidents highlight the dynamic and frequently enough unpredictable nature
of horse racing. From bumping and crowding to strategic decisions and
veterinary concerns, each event contributes to the narrative of the race.

Marketplace for industry News and Insights
Recently, an exciting yet incident-filled horse race gracefully defined the dynamic and unpredictable nature of this timeless sport. Archyde News editor sat down with racing steward, Ms. Emma loudon, and veterinarian, Dr. Henry Baker, to discuss the key incidents, regulatory actions, and tactical analyses from this thrilling event.
Key Incidents and Their Impact
Emma Loudon (EL): Ms. Loudon, can you share some insights into the most notable incidents from the recent race?
Emma Loudon: Certainly! One of the most concerning incidents involved TOP PEAK, ridden by C L Chau. A veterinary inspection revealed blood in the horse’s trachea, which led to a requirement for a further veterinary examination before its next race. This incident underscores the importance of our role in ensuring the well-being of the horses.
Rider Tactics and Steward Decisions
EL: Another significant aspect of the race was the tactics employed by jockey A Badel on ETALON OR. The stewards deemed his tactics “reasonable in the circumstances.” How do you assess these situations, Emma?
Emma Loudon: we stewards take a holistic view, considering the specific circumstances faced by the rider at the time. It’s crucial to understand that jockeys must ofen adapt to unpredictabilities on the track. In this case, Badel’s strategy was deemed appropriate given ETALON OR’s wide positioning and carrying weight.
Henry Baker (HB): Dr. Baker, as a veterinarian, what drew your attention during the post-race inspections?
Henry Baker: The bleeding from both nostrils in MANAPHY was of particular concern. This issue requires further investigation and an official veterinary examination before the horse races again. Our top priority is the health and safety of these magnificent animals.
Safety and Well-being in Racing
