Sean Lennon Uncovers New Depths in His Parents’ Love Story

While assembling materials for the Mind Games box set, Sean Lennon gained fresh insights into his parents’ profound and complex relationship.

“The truth is, even when they were apart, they were always talking, so I don’t think they ever really broke up,” he said, referencing his father’s “Lost Weekend” period, an 18-month separation during which his belongings remained in the family apartment. “It’s not like they had a real separation. And on top of it, all my dad was thinking about was her.”

“You look at the album cover[of[ofMind Games],” he continues, “it’s a collage of my mum literally the size of a mountain, and he’s this little tiny thing sort of fading into the background. And I think it’s clear what his view of my mum was in his life. She was monumental, obviously. And the whole album is about her.”

A Bond Unbroken

Yoko Ono remained steadfastly by her husband’s side when he was tragically murdered outside their New York apartment in 1980. She never remarried and dedicated her life to preserving his legacy and ensuring his music lived on. In recent years, Sean Lennon has taken on a larger role in overseeing the John Lennon estate. His mother, now 91, has rarely been seen in public, and Sean feels a deep responsibility to keep his father’s legacy alive for new generations.

“We’re living in an age where enough time has passed,” he said in a 2020 interview commemorating what would have been his father’s 80th birthday. “No one bothers to make sure that the younger generations have an opportunity to be exposed to it. I just always assumed the Beatles and John Lennon — no one is going to forget those stories. I don’t think my dad would have been satisfied with just being somebody that you have to discover through your own research.”

Beyond the Past: Sean Lennon’s Musical Journey

While meticulously navigating his father’s legacy, Sean Lennon has forged his own path in the music industry. He released his debut album,
_Into The Sun_, back in 1998 and continues to write and perform. Last summer, he joined Colonel Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog tour, even performing a complete rendition of Pink Floyd’s _Animals_ each night alongside Harry Waters, the son of Pink Floyd bassist Roger Waters.
Earlier this year, Sean released his latest album,
_Asterisms_.
