Ukraine War: Key Battles and Shifting front Lines

The war in Ukraine continues to rage, with critical battles concentrated along the 260-mile front in the Donbas region, especially around Donetsk. A senior U.S. military official, speaking anonymously, stated that the pause on sharing intelligence has “hurt Ukraine’s ability to detect and attack Russian forces” in Kursk and has “hampered its ability to strike high-value targets.” keith Kellogg, the special U.S. envoy for ukraine, acknowledged that this move would have a “significant” impact on Ukraine’s battlefield conduct.

Ukrainian soldiers have reported that this lack of intelligence is particularly problematic in the Kursk region,where Russian and North Korean soldiers are on the offensive and have “rapidly advanced.” Preserving control over Kursk is considered crucial by Ukraine as leverage in potential future negotiations.

The Defense of Pokrovsk

Pokrovsk, a city crucial for rail and road lines in the Donbas region, has been a focal point of intense fighting. Russian forces advanced to within three miles of the city in December, attempting to envelop it from the south. Though, “well-prepared Ukrainian defenses have prevented a frontal assault,” leading to localized counterattacks to regain beneficial positions.

Maj. Taras, a deputy battalion commander in the 68th Jaeger Brigade, described one such operation last month to retake part of Dachenske, a village south of Pokrovsk. “We stocked up on ammunition, conducted, let’s say, a mini-artillery readiness, identified in which parts of the village the enemy was located, and delivered a massive strike there,” he recounted.

The battle for Dachenske lasted about 90 minutes, with Ukrainian forces eventually controlling about half of the village. “But, major Taras said, ‘to fully control and take the entire village, more people and more resources are needed.'” This reflects the broader challenges faced by Ukrainian forces, who are “trying to exploit Russian weaknesses but limited by their own shortages of troops and firepower.”

Street by Street Fighting in Toretsk

The strategic city of Toretsk has been the scene of intense urban combat for eight months. Capt. Bohdan ravlikovskyi, of the 12th Special Forces Brigade Azov, noted the close-quarters nature of the fighting, stating, “There have even been cases where the enemy crawls forward with mines strapped to their backs to blow up our positions—crawling under a building, throwing in mines, and detonating them.”

Russian forces aim to penetrate deeply into Toretsk using various means, including “motorcycles, civilian vehicles, armored vehicles or on foot.” However, Ukrainian forces have recently been advancing in localized counterattacks, demonstrating resilience in the face of adversity.

Critical shortages of troops and ammunition, exacerbated by “a six-month delay” in American assistance and “organizational issues,” resulted in Russia seizing approximately 1,600 square miles of Ukrainian territory in 2024. Despite being outmanned and outgunned, Ukrainian forces are inflicting heavy losses on Russian forces with the aid of an “ever expanding constellation of drones.”

The Destroyed Fortress Town: Chasiv Yar

Chasiv Yar, a vital hilltop town, continues to be a fiercely contested area.Lt. Mykola, a commander with the Ukrainian 5th Assault Brigade, stated, “We are still holding almost the same lines.”

After the fall of Bakhmut in May 2023, the Russians spent nearly a year advancing eight miles toward Chasiv Yar. They have since implemented measures to protect their supply lines from Ukrainian drone attacks. Similar to Toretsk, Chasiv Yar serves as a crucial buffer, preventing a direct assault on Kostiantynivka and other cities under kyiv’s control in the Donetsk region.

Russian forces launched their “first direct assaults” on Chasiv Yar in April 2024, employing tactics such as leveling fortifications with guided bombs, attacking with armored columns and infantry-led assaults, and infiltrating Ukrainian lines through pipelines and tunnels.

Lieutenant Mykola noted that the fighting is relentless, but the enemy is also suffering. “We see their declining troop quality and quantity, which, fortunately for us, is worsening,” he observed.
