Valkenburg, Netherlands – The mayor of Valkenburg, Daan Prevoo, announced plans to launch a crowdfunding campaign to rebuild the Wilhelminators, a tourist attraction and national monument that collapsed early Sunday morning. The cause of the collapse is currently unknown.
Prevoo told NOS News that he hopes to share more details about the fundraising campaign later in the week, anticipating donations from across the country. “Which Dutchman has not been to Valkenburg?” he remarked.
He also noted the town’s recent history of near-disasters, stating that his municipality “has already escaped a disaster for the second time: first the climate disaster, and now the collapsed tower. In both cases there were fortunately no victims.”
the collapse follows a major flood in 2021 that damaged approximately 2,300 homes and caused an estimated 400 million euros in damages. Nobody was injured in the flood.

The 30-meter-high tower, originally built in 1906, collapsed around 5:30 a.m. on Sunday. Prevoo called it “lucky in an accident,” explaining that the tower is located near a toboggan run, cable car, and various restaurants.
“If it had happened a few hours later, it would have been full here with families who had come here on a sunny Sunday. Then we would have really had a drama.”
Prevoo plans to consult with the National Service for Cultural Heritage to assess what can be salvaged from the tower. The Dutch Safety Board will also investigate the cause of the collapse.
