Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nevada, has launched a new Crisis Care Center dedicated to addressing the growing need for mental health services in Washoe County.
A Much-Needed Resource
The facility, equipped with 10 beds and 15 lounge chairs, can accommodate up to 25 patients aged 18 and older. Dr. Rahul Mediwala, Chief Executive Officer of Renown medical Group, emphasized the importance of this resource.
“This is such an important resource because Nevada ranks close to the bottom in terms of mental health resources for anyone with a mental health crisis,” he said.
According to Mental Health America, Nevada places 45th in the nation for access to mental healthcare, with one in five adults experiencing mental health challenges.
Evidence-Based Approaches and Personalized Care
Dr. Takesha Cooper, Chief of Behavioral Health at Renown Regional Medical Center, outlined the center’s approach. “Our goal is to have patients come in and do a quick assessment, understand what their situation is, their challenges are, and then really start problem solving,” she explained.
The center’s team, comprising licensed clinical social workers, psychiatrists, and psychologists, will provide evidence-based tools to patients for continued use outside the facility.
“We are going to be offering medication assessment, psychiatric medications, substance use, medications and treatment as well,” Dr.Cooper said.
Personal connection and Local Focus
Joaquin Roces,a peer recovery support specialist as 2019,shared his powerful personal connection to the center’s mission.
“What is key to the service I provide to patients is my lived experience,” he said. “Nobody believed I would change, but I did.”
Mr.Roces emphasized the importance of prioritizing local solutions. “We must focus on our own corner of the world on what we can control,” he said.
Specialized Care and Ongoing Support
The Crisis Care Center will address a range of mental health crises, including anxiety, depression, emotional regulation challenges, trauma, PTSD, stress management, grief and loss, self-harming behaviors, suicidal ideation, substance use, and life transitions. While the facility will provide short-term intervention, experts will assist patients in accessing ongoing long-term care.
Community Collaboration and Funding
The new facility is a product of collaboration between Washoe County Emergency Response System,Renown Health, and the University of Nevada School of Medicine. Grants have been a crucial source of funding for this initiative.
Looking Ahead
The opening of the Crisis Care center signifies a vital step forward in addressing the mental health crisis in Washoe County. By providing accessible, evidence-based care in a supportive habitat, this new resource aims to make a tangible difference in the lives of those struggling with mental health challenges.
