Remains of Orlando Jorge Mera will be buried this afternoon

SANTO DOMINGO.-The remains of the Minister of the Environment, Orlando Jorge Mera, will receive a Christian burial this followingnoon at the Puerta del Cielo cemetery.

The Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), to which he is a member, will pay homage to him at its National House at 1:00 in the followingnoon.

The minister’s funeral honors began this Tuesday with a body mass present in the chapel of the National Palace. The Eucharist was offered by the priest Franklin Rodríguez. All the government ministers were present at the mass.

After the mass, the body was transferred to the Blandino Funeral Home on Abraham Lincoln Avenue where it is being watched.

His relatives, friends, and other sectors of society, as well as political figures, such as the President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, have attended the wake.

President Luis Abinader issued decree 298-22 declaring official mourning on June 7, 8 and 9 of this year, for the death of Orlando Jorge Mera.

Fausto Miguel de Jesús Cruz de la Mota, who yesterday before noon came to the office of the Minister of the Environment, Orlando Jorge Mera, and shot him to death, had been under the control of the Public Ministry since mid-followingnoon.

According to a note from the Public Ministry with the account of the events, the murderer fled the scene and arrived at the Church of Jesus Christ, High and Eternal Priest, located in the Real urbanization, not far from the Ministry of the Environment, and handed over the pistol to a priest whom he told that he had killed a person he did not identify.

This man and the minister Jorge Mera, according to versions from relatives, were friends since childhood and treated each other as if they were brothers.
