What will Randy Magrath do first in POSTAL 2: VR?

Archyde Interview: Flat2VR’s Randy Magrath on Bringing POSTAL 2 to VR

We sat down with Randy Magrath, Lead Designer at Flat2VR Studio, to discuss teh upcoming release of POSTAL 2: VR and the challenges and triumphs of adapting a cult classic for virtual reality.

The vision Behind POSTAL 2: VR

Archyde: Randy, thanks for joining us. POSTAL 2 is known for its, shall we say, *unique* brand of humor and gameplay. What inspired Flat2VR to bring this title to the VR platform?

Randy Magrath: Thanks for having me! The decision was simple: POSTAL 2‘s chaotic sandbox is a perfect fit for VR. Imagine the immersion—being *in* Paradise, causing mayhem, but now with the ability to physically interact with everything. It’s the ultimate wish fulfillment (or nightmare, depending on your outlook!).We wanted to amp up the immersion and create a VR experience unlike any other.

Challenges and Innovations in VR Growth

Archyde: Adapting a non-VR game to virtual reality must come with its own set of design challenges. What were some of the biggest hurdles you faced during development?

Randy Magrath: Plenty! Firstly, movement. Standard FPS movement can be jarring in VR. We had to experiment with different locomotion schemes to find something comfortable yet still empowering. Then there’s the user interface – everything had to be reimagined for VR. Our revamped virtual reality inventory system and the new in-game compass are the result of that effort. But perhaps the biggest challenge was getting that perfect blend of immersion and over-the-top action. We wanted POSTAL 2: VR to feel like a true VR experience, not just a port.

Weaponry and interactivity

Archyde: You mentioned the virtual reality inventory system. Can you elaborate a bit on the VR weapon system? The declaration mentioned budget being allocated to this. Is this what were excited for?

Randy Magrath: Absolutely! Weapons in the original POSTAL 2 were already pretty wild, but in VR, thay’re a whole new level of insane. We put a lot of work into making each weapon feel unique and satisfying to use. Whether you’re wielding a shovel, a rocket launcher, or… well, let’s just say some other *unique* items, the tactile feel is truly immersive. Firing a shotgun and feeling the recoil in VR is a game changer. Plus, the new gesture system lets you interact with NPCs in…interesting ways. Waving, flipping the bird—it adds a whole new layer of depravity that fans will love.

The Future of VR Gaming

Archyde: Beyond POSTAL 2: VR, where do you see the future of VR gaming heading? What areas excite you most?

Randy Magrath: I think we’re just scratching the surface. Enhanced immersion is key, and we’re seeing astonishing advancements in haptics and presence. The industry really needs to focus on the intuitive controls and on optimizing VR hardware too. As processing power increases, we’ll see even more realistic and detailed VR worlds. And beyond gaming, the applications in training, simulation, and education are limitless. VR can allow for a new level of immersive learning and training.

Final Thoughts and Audience Engagement

Archyde: what message do you have for fans eagerly awaiting the release of POSTAL 2: VR?

Randy Magrath: Get ready for a wild ride! We’ve poured our hearts (and maybe a little bit of our sanity) into bringing POSTAL 2 to VR in a way that honors the original while pushing the boundaries of the platform. We can’t wait for you to experience Paradise like never before!

Archyde: Thanks for your time, Randy. One final question for our readers (and for you,Randy): What’s the first thing you’ll do when you step into POSTAL 2: VR? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
