Fuel Pump Issue Pinpointed to Tank Lining Suspect
A recent investigation has laid to rest concerns about Pertamax fuel potentially causing damage to vehicle fuel pumps.
Independent lab results conducted by the Research and Industry Affiliated Institute (LAPI) of the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), alongside tests by the Oil and Gas Institute (Lemigas), have confirmed that Pertamax fuel is not implicated in the damange.
“Sediment samples from a vehicle reported to have experienced fuel pump damage were analyzed, and. the ITB LAPI team determined that Pertamax fuel was not responsible,” said Vice President Corporate Communications for Pertamina, Fadjar Djoko Santoso, on Sunday.
Pertamina had previously addressed complaints from a car owner who reported fuel pump damage, suggesting it was related to the use of Pertamax. The results of these extensive tests dispel those claims.
Debunking the Pertamax Tank Issues
Dr. Tri Yuswidjajanto Zaenuri, an Energy Conversion Expert from the School of Aeronautics and
Aerospace at ITB, explains that detailed analysis of the sediment in question did not reveal any characteristics associated with Pertamax.
“Based on EDS (Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy) analysis, we found that the sediment-forming compounds were not present in the Pertamax fuel itself,” he stated.
Further investigation revealed that the culprit behind the car’s fuel pump failure is most likely a common suspect: the anti-corrosion material used to line metal gas tanks.
According to the research, this tank-lining material can sometimes break down and introduce sediment into the fuel system.
