Pasuruan City Aims for Zero New HIV Infections by 2030

Pasuruan City Collaborates on HIV/AIDS Prevention, Sets Sights on Zero New Infections by 2030

Pasuruan City is taking a collaborative approach to combat HIV/AIDS. Acting Mayor Adi Wibowo highlighted the importance of multifaceted efforts during the 2024 AIDS Day Commemoration on Saturday, November 30. “Handling HIV/AIDS isn’t just about medical interventions,” Wibowo stated. “We need strategic steps that involve the whole community – government, stakeholders, and individuals.”

Engaging Youth as Agents of Change

“We see that those who are here today are young people, the next generation who can become agents of change,” Wibowo said in a written statement on Sunday, December 1. “We need them to convey positive messages and educate the community about AIDS prevention.”

Tackling the Challenge of Stigma

Despite advancements in treatment and prevention, stigma remains a significant obstacle. Wibowo acknowledged this, stating, “One of the biggest challenges we face is the stigma still attached to HIV/AIDS. This stigma makes many survivors reluctant to disclose their condition, which makes it harder to provide effective treatment.”

“It is vital to communicate to the public that AIDS can affect anyone,” Wibowo stressed. “We urge the public not to discriminate against people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). When PLWHA feel accepted, they are more likely to be open about their status, which allows us to provide better care.”

Working Towards An AIDS-Free Future

Pasuruan City is committed to achieving the national goal of an AIDS-free Indonesia by 2030. As part of this commitment, the city is working towards the “Three Zero” target: zero new HIV/AIDS infections, zero AIDS-related deaths, and zero stigma and discrimination against PLWHA.

“Currently, we have around 582 AIDS survivors in Pasuruan City, with an additional 34 new cases this year,” Wibowo revealed. “Our hope is that these 34 new cases will not be transmitted to their loved ones, be it family or relatives.”
