In terms of making it to a professional career: Europe teaches you to believe in yourself, to go against adversity and to fight for every opportunity.
Archyde News: Now that you’re back, how do you see the trajectory of your career? Are you focused on getting back into an academy, or do you have different goals?
Leo Guarino: That is my aim.[Assuming he’s not in a new academy yet]. I’m looking at options in the US. I am still considering MLS academies, but open to other options. I’m working hard, training every day, and staying ready for the next chapter. My goal is definitely still to play professional soccer professionally.
Archyde News: The youth soccer landscape is evolving constantly.What advice would you give to young players considering a similar path – potentially leaving MLS academies for European prospects?
Leo Guarino: I would tell them to do their research and really understand the opportunity. Think about what you are hoping to gain and what you are potentially giving up. Get the facts.It is very important to know, or feel, like you would fit in over there. Not all environments are equal, so go in with your eyes wide open. Be sure you are doing this for the right reasons. And, most importantly, be ready to work incredibly hard and be adaptable.
Archyde News: What are your thoughts on the level of talent being developed in the current academies in the US compared to when you were coming through, or in relation to what you saw in Europe?
leo Guarino: It’s improved massively. The MLS academies are getting better and better. The facilities,the coaching,the understanding of the game – it’s all improving,and a lot of kids are having success in the MLS now. If a young American player wants to get to Europe, it can still be a decent path to take. But, there is no easy answer.In general, the development is trending upwards.
Archyde News: What do you see as the most notable difference, the biggest difference, in the styles of play between the US and Europe?
Leo Guarino: The intensity. The pace is just relentless in Europe as any team can beat you. And the tactical understanding. Because the competition is so high, there is a higher level of tactical discipline and awareness on the pitch.
