Most significant precipitation recorded since the start of winter – noe.ORF.at

The article titled “Chronicle” reports on the recent heavy rain that has fallen and is expected to continue until Saturday. This rain is seen as a relief to the drought but has caused flooding in some areas, damaging around 40 cellars. Nonetheless, firefighters were able to pump out flooded cellars in Hinterbrühl, Wiener Neudorf, Stockerau and Strasshof an der Nordbahn. The article also mentions the effects of the rain on groundwater levels, expecting it to rise slightly. The article reports on the heaviest precipitation since the beginning of winter, which includes heavy snowfall in the mountains like in Lackenhof am Ötscher. The snowfall level is expected to be around 700 meters. On Saturday, the snow line is expected to rise to 800-900 meters during the day. Heavy rain is expected to continue during the night with gradually decreasing precipitation intensities on Sunday.

Finally rain – an average of 30 to 50 liters per square meter have come together. According to ORF meteorologists, the intense precipitation will last until Saturday and will alleviate the drought. In places, however, it is too much: around 40 cellars were flooded.

In Hinterbrühl, in Wiener Neudorf (both in the Mödling district), Stockerau (in the Korneuburg district) and in Strasshof an der Nordbahn (in the Gänserndorf district), firefighters had to turn out several times to pump out flooded cellars. Otherwise, the rain on Friday was more fun than a problem.

The drought in the top soils should be significantly alleviated. There was regarding 60 millimeters of rain in the past 24 hours in Krumbach (Wiener Neustadt district), 50 in Tulln, Stockerau and Gumpoldskirchen (Mödling district).

Groundwater level will rise minimally

The groundwater level, which is far too low in many regions, is also expected to rise – but not by too much. Currently, one to two decimeters are assumed in water management. “We can see that the soil was very dry and can currently absorb a lot of water, but we will only be able to assess how much of it really seeps into the groundwater in a few days,” said Martin Angelmaier, head of the Lower Austria water management department, to noe.ORF. at.

FF Wilhelmsburg-Stadt

Volunteers from the Wilhelmsburg fire brigade rescued swan eggs from the Traisen. Due to the persistent rains, the nest and the eggs in it were in danger of being flooded and washed away by the rising water level

It is also expected that the water level in water bodies such as the Traisen will rise. “The levels will be in the range of a one-year flood event. This is an outflow that occurs on a long-term average once a year,” explains Angelmaier.

Heavy rain continued on Saturday

On the mountains, such as in Lackenhof am Ötscher (Scheibbs district), 50 to 60 centimeters of fresh snow were recorded – the same amount is expected for Saturday. The avalanche warning service speaks of the heaviest precipitation since the beginning of winter, the avalanche danger is great.

During the night on Saturday it will continue to rain heavily at times, with a snowfall level of around 700 metres. The focus of rain and snowfall is gradually shifting to the Mostviertel. On Saturday, the snow line will rise to 800 to 900 meters during the day. There is still greater precipitation intensities until midday. In the course of the followingnoon, rain and snowfall will gradually decrease. On Sunday it will be mostly dry.

After a long period of drought, the much-needed rain has finally arrived in Austria, bringing both relief and some challenges. While the heavy downpour has helped alleviate the dryness in top soils, it has also led to flooding in some areas. But despite the challenges, the rain has been a welcome sight for many. It is expected that the groundwater levels will also rise minimally, providing some respite to the dry conditions. With the rain continuing into Saturday, the focus has shifted to the Mostviertel, with heavy snowfall and precipitation predicted in the region. But as the rain subsides and the sun comes out, Austria can look forward to a greener and healthier landscape.
