Green transportation enthusiasts have an appointment at the Montreal Electric Vehicle Show this weekend.

With 130 exhibitors and 50 models on the floor of the Olympic Stadium, the event hopes to increase Quebecers’ interest in electric vehicles, while the craze seems to be running out of steam across the country.

In 2022, 68% of Canadian consumers who did not own an electric vehicle said they were open to the idea of buying one. A year later, their interest had dropped to 56%.

According to the President and CEO of Electric Mobility Canada, Daniel Breton, the drop in the price of gasoline and the long delivery times largely explain this drop in interest.

“It is sure that it is problematic and it is sure that it decreases the interest. The Quebec government has announced that it is to tighten its zero emission standard to force manufacturers to supply Quebec,” he told TVA Nouvelles.

In 2022, 14.6% of vehicles sold in the country were electric, which greatly exceeds and ahead of the target set by Ottawa for 2024.

Daniel Breton is also of the opinion that it is exceeding this objective in a hasty manner that encourages manufacturers to take their foot off the pedal with regard to the delivery of electric vehicles.
