Dimitar marinov, the eccentric showman known as “Mityo Pishtova,” died Monday at the age of 69 in a Burgas hospital.Marinov, who was planning to celebrate his 70th birthday in August, had been battling a number of health issues in recent years.
A Life Marked by Resilience and Controversy
marinov’s health had been declining for the past seven years, with ailments including a hemorrhage in the large intestine, two heart attacks, diabetes, a diseased pancreas, and complications from coronavirus. Despite these challenges, he maintained a spirited outlook, even as he required a walker to move around his home.
He sought treatment both in Germany, where he received a pacemaker, and in Israel, for a spinal injury. The costs of these medical trips were reportedly covered by wealthy friends. Pishtova frequently enough said he “loves life” and claimed to have been “at least 4 times with death.”
From “VIP Brother” to Vice Presidential Candidate
Beyond his health struggles, Pishtova led a colorful and often controversial public life. He participated in the first season of the reality show “VIP Brother” in 2006. In 2015, he ran for mayor of Veliko Tarnovo, and in 2016, he appeared as a vice-presidential candidate alongside Rado Shisharka.

However,he stated that after Pavlov’s murder in March 2003,he decided to “make a turn” and distance himself from those groups.

In February 2025, reports surfaced that Pishtova was in hospice care in Chernomorets. He confirmed this, noting the clean air and sea views. However, a video later appeared showing him using a walker, looking weakened. At that time, Marinov vowed to recover.
Following his death, friends and acquaintances shared their memories. Emil Dimitrov wrote on Facebook, “We left us an iconic personality of Veliko Turnovo,” and described Pishtova as “Naive and kinde of the people, cheerful people.” Another acquaintance, Georgi Daskalov, posted, “my good friend Mityo left last night, God forgive him.”
Relatives noted that one of the most difficult moments for Pishtova in the past year was the death of his brother Ivan from cancer.
A Self-Proclaimed “Man of Luxury”
In one of his final public appearances, Marinov described himself as “A man of luxury, money, yachts, luxury, lots of love,” and declared, “Mityo Pishtova is number 1, Mityo Pishtova will remain in history.”
He also said, “This is because I am a soul man, onyl I help the orphans, but I also know what they are because I grew up without a parent.”

Elena Petrova: It’s bittersweet, honestly. Mityo was… a character. A force of nature, really. He lived a life that most people only dream of, filled with both incredible triumphs and profound struggles. His passing marks the end of a very particular era in Bulgarian media and public life.
Archyde: He certainly lived a public life, from “VIP Brother” to running for political office.How did these experiences shape his public image?
Elena Petrova: They amplified it, definitely. “VIP Brother” exposed him to a wider audience, showcasing his eccentric personality. The political runs,both for mayor and as a vice-presidential candidate,cemented his image as someone who wasn’t afraid to break the mold. He was using these platforms to comment on society in his own unique way, nonetheless of political correctness.
Archyde: The article mentions his health battles. How did he cope with those challenges, especially considering his flamboyant personality?
Elena Petrova: mityo had incredible resilience. He faced serious health issues, some of which nearly took his life, multiple times. But he always bounced back with renewed zest. He frequently enough said he “loved life” and truly embodied that sentiment, even in the face of adversity. It was almost as if he knew his time was limited and wanted to experience everything he could.

Elena Petrova: I think many people dismissed him as just a flamboyant entertainer. but he was actually quite astute and aware of his own image. He used his persona to comment on society, to challenge norms, and to generate attention for causes he believed in.He was more than just Mityo Pishtova; he was a social commentator in disguise.
