Remembering Bernadette Payne: An Interview with Family Friend, John Francombe

A Conversation on Loss and Legacy

The horse racing community is mourning the passing of Bernadette Payne. To offer a more personal perspective, we spoke with John Francombe, a long-time friend of the Payne family.

Interview

Archyde: John, thank you for taking the time to speak with us during what must be a very difficult period. How did you first come to know Bernadette and the Payne family?

John Francombe: I’ve known the Paynes for decades, really.I met Paddy Payne years ago through the racing circuit, and through him, I got to know all the kids, including Bernadette. You know, the Payne family is legendary in Ballarat, and their contribution to horse racing is immense. Bernadette was always there, always passionate.

Archyde: Bernadette also had a career as a jockey. What are your memories of her time on the track?

John francombe: She was a fierce competitor,no doubt about it. She had that Payne determination. While Michelle’s Melbourne Cup win rightfully gets a lot of attention, bernadette had a very solid career, winning around 200 races is no small feat and a testament to her dedication and skill as a jockey. She was highly respected by her peers.

Archyde: The Payne family has endured more than their fair share of tragedy. How do you see them coping with this latest loss?

john Francombe: They’re a remarkably resilient family, but no one can deny that the loss of Mary and Brigid, and now Bernadette is an enormous burden. Paddy is an incredibly strong man, and Michelle’s success, I think, has given them all a great deal to be proud of. They rally together, that’s what they do. Their love for one another is unmistakable. I know Michelle really considered Bernadette her rock as they grew up.

Archyde: Racing Victoria’s statement highlighted the challenging time Bernadette had in recent years. Can you speak to that at all?

john francombe: Bernadette, like many in the racing industry, faced personal battles. it’s important to remember the human side of these stories. The statement saying she is now at peace really resonated with those who knew her struggles. She was a much-loved daughter, sister, and friend and all that knew her will remember her fondly.

Archyde: Michelle has spoken about Bernadette helping to raise her after their mother passed. How important was that sisterly bond?

John Francombe: Absolutely vital. Bernadette stepped up at a very young age. That kind of shared experience forges an unbreakable bond. You could always see the affection and respect between Michelle and Bernadette. It’s gorgeous as it’s obvious that each sibling carries a heavy burden of obligation in the Payne family for one another.

Archyde: What do you think Bernadette’s lasting legacy will be?

John Francombe: Beyond her accomplishments as a jockey, I think she’ll be remembered for her kindness and her unwavering support of her family. She was a strong woman who faced adversity with courage. Her memory will live on through her family and all those whose lives she touched, including horse racing and beyond.

Archyde: what message would you like to share with the Payne family at this time?

John Francombe: Just to offer my deepest condolences and let them know that they are in the thoughts and prayers of so many. The entire racing community, and beyond, stands with them during this difficult time.

Archyde: John, thank you again for your time and these heartfelt words. It’s truly appreciated.
