Adelaide, Australia – In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the family of the late Melissa Hoskins, an accomplished Australian Olympic cyclist, has conveyed a message of acceptance and profound grief during a recent court hearing. Hoskins tragically died in December 2023 after being struck by a vehicle driven by her husband, Rohan Dennis, also a former professional cyclist.The incident occurred outside their home in Medindie, a suburb of Adelaide.

Rohan Dennis initially faced multiple charges,including causing death by dangerous driving. However, prosecutors later dropped this charge, along with an aggravated charge of driving without due care. dennis ultimately pleaded guilty to one aggravated count of creating a likelihood of harm.

During monday’s proceedings at South Australia’s District court, victim impact statements were delivered by Melissa Hoskins’s father, Peter Hoskins, her sister, Jessica Locke, and her mother, Amanda Hoskins. The emotional testimonies shed light on the devastating impact of Melissa’s death on her loved ones.

Amanda Hoskins, Melissa’s mother, expressed her belief that Dennis would never intentionally harm her daughter, acknowledging that “Melissa was the best thing that ever happened to you [Dennis].” Despite accepting the incident as a tragic accident,she emphasized the profound and lasting impact on her family,stating,”Her death is so unfair and tragic.”

She further added, “Rohan, you loved melissa, and I know that you would never intentionally hurt her. I believe this was a tragic accident and an accident that should never have happened.”

In a poignant moment, Mrs. Hoskins addressed Dennis directly, adding, “Your temper is your downfall and needs to be addressed.” This raw and honest statement highlights the undercurrent of issues that may have contributed to the tragic outcome.

Details from the Court Hearing

Prosecutor Tali Costi provided the court with a detailed account of the events leading up to Melissa Hoskins’s death. While acknowledging that Dennis was not criminally responsible for her death, costi argued that he was either unaware or reckless to the fact that Hoskins was holding onto the vehicle.

Costi stated, “It is the continuing act of driving down Medindie Lane, when Mrs. Dennis was positioned on the bonnet of the vehicle, to the point when she had come off the bonnet but was standing very close to the vehicle and the act of accelerating.And that continuing combined conduct is the circumstances that created the acts likely to cause harm, the circumstances that were dangerous to Mrs. Dennis…”

Defense barrister Jane Abbey KC revealed that the couple had been involved in a “domestic dispute” earlier that day, reportedly stemming from disagreements about kitchen renovations. Abbey described the argument as a disagreement “about the fact that further work needed to be done to cupboards which had been installed in what was a new kitchen.” She characterized the disagreement as the kind of everyday squabble that many married couples experience.

Abbey further explained that the couple had a pre-existing agreement where,during arguments,”Mr.Dennis would remove himself” to allow for de-escalation. However, this protocol was not followed on the day of the incident.

CCTV footage presented in court showed “a period of less than three seconds in which a lot is happening,” according to Abbey. she stated that Dennis saw his wife reaching for the door handle and reacted by closing the door, intending to leave and defuse the situation. “He thoght that by putting his foot down, he was removing danger. That’s of course, in the light of day, something that he realizes was not a full picture and not a full thought,” Abbey said.

She added, “He put his foot down … and there’s about a second, just over, in which it can be seen that Mrs Dennis ran alongside the car.”

According to Abbey, Dennis told police he heard a noise, which he later realized was Hoskins either jumping onto or attempting to jump onto the car. Abbey asserted that Dennis did not realise Hoskins was near or on the car until he exited the vehicle and found her “on the road.”

Dennis’s Grief and Sentencing

Despite appearing stoic in public, Dennis is reportedly experiencing “deep, deep grief” over the loss of his wife, according to his barrister. “She was his wife, with whom he was in love at the time of her death,” Abbey stated. “It needs to be said he was devastated by her death.”

Abbey acknowledged that Dennis maintains a stoic demeanor,believing it’s notable for his children.Though, she emphasized that “when the public is not watching … he’s not at all stoic and it’s very challenging for him to talk about her.”

While the aggravated charge of creating a likelihood of harm carries a potential sentence of seven years’ imprisonment and a five-year license suspension, Abbey requested a suspended sentence. Prosecutor Costi agreed that a suspended sentence would be appropriate, considering the tragic circumstances and Dennis’s personal situation, including the care of his young children.
