Join Us for a Journey Across Continents with Dr. Gustavo Ottolenghi!

Mark your calendars, folks! Tomorrow, Tuesday, November 26th at 4:30 PM, a gathering of epic proportions is taking place. In collaboration with Lions Club International – District 108 Ia3 Italy – Zone IV B, we’ll be sitting down for a special meeting featuring none other than Overland’s very own Dr. Gustavo Ottolenghi, the “Overland Doctor.” Sounds adventurous, right? I mean, who needs Netflix when you have a real-life globe-trotting doctor sharing stories? Let’s just hope he doesn’t prescribe us a life of travel; my bank account would stage a coup!

Meet the Legend: Dr. Gustavo Ottolenghi

Buckle up, we’re diving into the fantastic tale of Dr. Ottolenghi, a medical marvel born in Turin in 1932. The man isn’t just a doctor; he’s a full-blown expedition hero! With a degree in Medicine and Surgery (and more specializations than you can shake a stethoscope at), he’s not just passing through life — he’s traversing the globe, one adventure at a time. After his naval missions left him honored with a captain’s tale, he brought his medical prowess back to Sanremo, taking charge of the radiology department. But that was just the beginning!

World-Wide Wanderer

Since the 1950s, Dr. Ottolenghi has been carting his medical kit across continents, participating in a variety of treks organized by Beppe Tenti’s “Trekking International.” We’re talking everything from running through the Tarahumara tribes in Mexico (because why not?!) to sledding through Alaska. Oh, and did I mention he’s scaled Mount Kilimanjaro and reached the Everest base camp? Meanwhile, I can barely scale the stairs without gasping for breath! Not to mention the adventures along the Silk Road and the Sahara — clearly, Dr. Ottolenghi has taken the phrase “see the world” to a whole new level.

Doctor by Day, Adventurer by Night

Throughout these globetrotting excursions, Dr. Ottolenghi wasn’t just living the dream; he was working too! Imagine combining the delightful chaos of traveling with the medical responsibilities of ensuring that everyone makes it back in one piece. From tropical diseases like malaria to ensuring that sprains and insect bites didn’t ruin a person’s trek — he’s done it all. And let’s not forget about his impressive scientific contributions, gathering data on health metrics that would make even the most robust health app green with envy!

Real-World Heroism

But it’s not just the adventure that makes Ottolenghi special. No, the real story lies in the ways he’s offered healthcare to communities often overlooked. Imagine him trudging through deserts and dense forests, with not just a stethoscope, but a heart full of compassion, diagnosing cases of meningitis, treating pneumonia, and even addressing dental issues. It’s hard not to admire a man who trades the comforts of modernity to tackle profound health crises in remote places! It’s less grey’s anatomy and more “who needs a doctor when you have Dr. Ottolenghi?”

What’s Next?

And if that wasn’t enough, the very next day, Wednesday, November 27th at 4:30 PM, join Dr. Federica Flore discussing the life of Salvador Dalì as part of Surrealism’s centenary celebrations. Surprise! We’ve gone from mountains to masterpieces; that’s the power of a good calendar, isn’t it?

In Conclusion

So, don’t sit around contemplating your next binge-watch. Get out there and learn about living the Overland dream with Dr. Gustavo Ottolenghi! Who knows? You might find yourself inspired to trade your couch for a passport or at least gain some stories that’ll outshine your latest web series. And if all else fails, at least you’ll be a fountain of health knowledge — and let’s be honest, it beats pretending to know the plot of “Inception” again, doesn’t it?

See you there, fellow adventurers!

Tomorrow, Tuesday, 26 November at 4:30 PM, a significant event will take place in a private room, hosted in collaboration with Lions Club International – District 108 Ia3 Italy – Zone IV B. The guest speaker will be Dr. Gustavo Ottolenghi, renowned as the “Overland Doctor,” who will engage participants with his riveting tales of adventure and medicine from his extensive Overland expeditions around the globe.

Dr. Gustavo Ottolenghi, who has led an extraordinary life since his birth in Turin in 1932, earned his degree in Medicine and Surgery, followed by several specialized qualifications. He completed his military service in the Navy, where he served abroad and achieved the rank of medical vessel lieutenant. Afterward, he relocated to Sanremo, taking on the role of radiologist at the local Civil Hospital. He later advanced to the position of Head Doctor, overseeing the Radiology and Physical Therapy Section until he retired in 1989, concluding his specialist medical career.

Since the 1950s, Dr. Ottolenghi has lent his medical expertise to numerous expeditions organized by Beppe Tenti’s “Trekking International.” His travels include adventures among the Tarahumara tribes in Mexico, dog sledding in Alaska’s Tasjaq region, conquering Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, and reaching the Everest base camp via Kala Pattar in Nepal. He traversed the historic Silk Road from Venice to Beijing, explored the expansive Tenere desert in the Algerian Sahara, ventured through Egypt, and even accomplished a complete overland tour of the Mediterranean. His commitment to adventure led him to join Tenti’s OVERLAND projects as a doctor, participating in five of the six expeditions held from 1996 to 2002. Throughout these treks, Dr. Ottolenghi’s ability to forge genuine friendships with group members proved vital to the spirit and camaraderie essential for their successful journeys.

During his expeditions, Dr. Ottolenghi conducted professional activities not only for his fellow travelers but also for the local populations they encountered. He performed scientific analyses in collaboration with the Monzino Institute of the University of Milan, meticulously monitoring the health of expedition members under varying conditions of altitude—sometimes higher than 5,200 meters—and temperature extremes ranging from -30° to +45°C. Real-time data on cardiac and respiratory functions, blood pressure, body weight, and fat mass were transmitted electronically to Milan, enhancing the scientific understanding of these arduous journeys.

The challenges faced by expedition members included common ailments reflective of the diverse climates traversed, such as malaria, dysentery, sunstroke, and various injuries like wounds, insect bites, and fractures. Fortunately, Dr. Ottolenghi adeptly resolved these issues with the medical supplies he meticulously apportioned before their departures. A particularly harrowing incident required his expertise following an accident involving some members, showcasing his crucial role in ensuring their health and safety.

In contrast, the requests for medical aid from local populations were often more dire, as many had no access to healthcare, confronting crises stemming from conditions like meningitis, pneumonia, and malnutrition. Dr. Ottolenghi navigated these challenges with compassionate care, often resorting to empirical remedies to manage ailments ranging from dental issues to severe infections, thus responding to their urgent health needs.

Each of these profound professional and human experiences reshaped Dr. Ottolenghi’s perspective upon his return to everyday life. He continues to strive to assist these communities, enriched by the unforgettable memories and lessons learned during his journeys.

The Overland project, established in 1995, set out on an ambitious quest to capture a portrait of our planet by exploring its most remote areas while cultivating an exceptional television diary broadcast on Raiuno. Over the years, Overland has achieved remarkable milestones: 21 expeditions over 25 years, covering more than 565,000 kilometers—equivalent to traversing the Earth’s circumference 14 times—accomplished in over 2,300 days while crossing 445 borders across diverse geographical and climatic regions.

Overland is part of Beppe Tenti’s broader initiative aimed at promoting the “rediscovery” of overland travel—an endeavor he has pursued for over half a century.

In an entirely different event, on Wednesday, 27 November at 4:30 PM, the centenary celebration of Surrealism will feature a final appointment with Dr. Federica Flore. The theme for this presentation will be “Salvador Dalì. Painter and performer. A surrealist life,” offering a deep dive into the intriguing life of the iconic surrealist artist.
