A Region Reconnected

For the first time in 65 years, a direct commuter rail line connects southeastern Massachusetts to Boston’s South Station. According to data from The Commonwealth of massachusetts, Taunton, Fall River, and New Bedford were the only major urban centers within a 50-mile radius of Boston lacking this crucial connection. The new South Coast Rail aims to bridge this gap, offering a convenient and efficient transportation choice for commuters, students, and visitors alike.

The South Coast Rail project features two branches originating in Fall River and New Bedford, converging at a newly constructed station in East Taunton. This line then integrates with the existing Middleboro-Lakeville line,which has been rebranded as the Fall River-New Bedford line,ensuring a seamless connection to South station.

The complete journey from end to end is estimated to take approximately 90 minutes.Commuters are encouraged to consult the MBTA’s website for the moast up-to-date schedule data, as adjustments may occur during the initial rollout phase.

As part of the operational changes, the Middleboro-Lakeville station has been renamed Lakeville station. Regular commuter rail service has been shifted to the new Middleboro station on Grove Street. The Lakeville station will now exclusively serve the seasonal CapeFlyer trains, catering to summer tourism.

The South coast Rail adds six new stations to the MBTA network: East Taunton, freetown, Fall River Depot, Church Street, New Bedford, and the relocated Middleboro station.

Riding Free and Looking Ahead

To celebrate the launch,the MBTA is offering free rides on all trips originating from the six new South Coast Rail stations for the remainder of March. Furthermore, weekend rides and parking will be free until April 27, providing an added incentive for residents to experience the new service firsthand.

Jennifer Bryant, a resident of Middleboro, highlighted the practical benefits of the new rail line, saying, It’s just so much less stress. You know, I still have to take a couple of T trains when I get there, but it’s so much less stressful. Bryant, who is returning to the office as a government employee, is particularly excited about the free train rides.

Bryant also noted, I can sleep on it. I can do work on it. The new railway offers a relaxing mode of transportation for those who need to travel into the city, and those who wish to get work done during the commute.

Echoing the enthusiasm, commuter Mike Kelley remarked, Driving is terrible. Parking’s free for two months, so give it a shot. The free parking and initial promotional fares are designed to encourage widespread adoption and showcase the rail line’s potential.

The MBTA’s long-term vision is to establish a consistent schedule with trains running every 70 minutes on weekdays and every two hours on weekends, providing reliable and frequent service to meet the needs of South Coast communities.

Governor Healey Hails a New Era

Governor Maura Healey, along with other transportation officials, marked the inaugural day of service with a celebratory ride on the South Coast Rail from Fall River to Taunton. Following the ride, Healey held a news conference at the taunton station, emphasizing the importance of the project.

“It’s an awesome day.Not just for the South Coast, but for Massachusetts because it shows what’s possible. It shows we can actually do hard things.We can deliver on transformative things and God knows there’s enough that we need to do to deliver for residents in this state,” Healey stated.
