In a thrilling display of athleticism, Matt Richtman and Tejinesh Gebisa Tulu claimed the coveted titles at the 2025 los Angeles Marathon on Sunday, March 16. The event drew over 26,000 participants, including firefighters who bravely served during the recent LA wildfires.

American Victory After Decades

Richtman’s victory held special significance as he became the first American to win the race since 1994,clocking in at an impressive 2:07:56. “With this victory, Richtman also became the first American winner of the race since 1994,” marking a historic moment for U.S. marathon running.This win,achieved in only his second marathon after debuting at the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon in October 2024,earned Richtman a prize of $10,000.

Athanas Kioko and Moses Kiptoo Kurgat, both from Kenya, secured the second and third positions with respective times of 2:10:55 and 2:13:12.

Tulu Takes Women’s Title

Tejinesh Gebisa Tulu demonstrated exceptional prowess in the women’s professional race, clinching victory with a time of 2:30:16. A former U20 global medalist in the 3000m steeplechase, Tulu finished ahead of Antonina Kwambai (2:30:19) and Savannah Berry (2:30:31).

Notably, the Los Angeles Marathon ensured equal prize money for both men’s and women’s professional racers.

    Archyde News: Matt,congratulations on becoming the first American to win the LA Marathon as 1994! How does it feel?

    Matt Richtman: It’s incredible,a dream come true. Crossing that finish line was an remarkable rush. Knowing I was the first american in decades to win it… that’s something special.

    Training and preparation

    Archyde News: Eleanor, what specific training strategies did you implement to prepare Matt for the Los Angeles Marathon, especially considering his relatively recent marathon debut at the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon?

    Eleanor Vance: We focused on building endurance and speed while acclimating to the LA climate. We incorporated a lot of hill work and longer runs to prepare him for the course. The Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon gave us a baseline, and we adjusted the training to maximize his performance for LA. We focused on ensuring Matt’s peak performance aligned with the scheduling in the lead-up to the 2028 Summer Games being held in LA.

    The road to the olympics

    Archyde News: Matt, your win is perfectly timed with the upcoming 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. How does this victory impact your Olympic aspirations?

    Matt Richtman: It definitely boosts my confidence and puts me on the radar. Running on these streets and performing well is excellent preparation for the Olympic trials.It’s a stepping stone, and I’m more motivated than ever.

    Archyde News: Eleanor, what are the next steps for Matt in terms of training and competition schedule leading up to the Olympic trials?

    Eleanor Vance: We’ll be focusing on recovery first, then gradually upping the intensity. ideally, we plan for strategic races that align with our goals, to fine-tune his form and further build his confidence.

    Archyde News: Matt, reflecting on both your training and the actual race, what adjustments, if any, do you anticipate making in preparation for the 2028 Olympics?

    Matt Richtman: it really highlighted the areas needing improvements, like maintaining pace in the later stages of the race. so, we will be looking at optimizing my nutrition, focusing more on endurance, and refining my strategy.
