Less generous and more selective… Increases more complicated to obtain in 2025

According to a study by Mercer, companies will hit the brakes when it comes to increases for their employees. The main reason is the drop in inflation which is leading to a form of return to pre-Covid habits, but also a certain pessimism for 2025.

You should not be too greedy regarding increases. This is the main lesson of a study on remuneration by the Mercer firm which surveyed 800 companies. As a result, the latter should be more cautious about increases in 2025: with 3% on average and not for everyone. After 2023 and 2024, marked by exceptional salary increases linked to high inflation, the stabilization of prices leads to a virtual return to habits before the health crisis.

A very unstable economic and political context

“Increase budgets have always tended to follow inflation”, reminds Europe 1 microphone Cyril Bellanger, remuneration consulting director Mercer France. And the obligatory annual negotiations promise to be more tense than in 2023 and 2024. This is also due to the very unstable economic and political context. “There is an extremely important aspect, it is the pessimism of companies in relation to 2025. And what we notice compared to past years is that we find a little more selectivity. We also have this aspect of trying to retain the most efficient employees”, adds the specialist.

Half of the companies surveyed say they will not grant a collective increase in 2025.
