The left-wing candidate Yamandú Orsi has won the presidential election in Uruguay. According to official figures from Sunday, after 94 percent of the voting districts were counted, Orsi was ahead of the conservative candidate Alvaro Delgado, who received 46.4 percent of the vote, with 49.3 percent. Incumbent conservative President Luis Lacalle Pou congratulated Orsi on his election victory and offered his support for the transition process.
Orsi stated that he did not want to make a radical change of course. In a speech to supporters, the election winner announced that he would “repeatedly” call for national dialogue “to find the best solutions.” Despite some challenges such as the high cost of living and rising crime, the election campaign in the South American country was largely tension-free. Uruguay is considered relatively wealthy and politically stable.
Delgado had already admitted his defeat after the first projections became known. “Today Uruguayans decided who will take over the presidency of the republic,” Delgado told supporters in Montevideo.
In the first round at the end of October, Orsi from the Frente Amplio (Broad Front) party alliance came first with almost 44 percent. The 57-year-old was also slightly ahead in the second-round polls, but the gap to Delgado from incumbent President Luis Lacalle Pou’s National Party had narrowed in the final days before the election.
Orsi is considered a protégé of the extremely popular former president José “Pepe” Mujica, who became known as the “poorest president in the world” during his term in office from 2010 to 2015 because of his modest lifestyle. Orsi is a moderate leftist who was born in the countryside in a house without electricity and later became a history teacher.
