Simose Art Museum, a stunningly designed space nestled on the beachfront in Otake, Hiroshima Prefecture, has been praised as the world’s most beautiful museum. The prestigious Prix Versailles award was announced Tuesday, with Simose earning top honors in the newly established museum category.
Established in 2015, the Prix Versailles is an internationally recognized award celebrating the world’s finest architecture and design. The ceremonies are held annually at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. This year’s competition saw Simose selected from a distinguished group of seven museums, including the A4 Art Museum in Chengdu, China and the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, Egypt.
The museum, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Shigeru Ban, made a striking impression with its innovative design. Ban, lauded as the “Nobel Prize” recipient for his architectural excellence, embraced a bold concept for the museum, which opened its doors in 2023.
Simose Art Museum is a striking showcase for the works of French artist and designer Emile Galle, among other notable artists. Ban’s vision extends beyond traditional gallery walls, incorporating eight mobile galleries which can be rearranged to create diverse exhibition layouts, ensuring a dynamic and captivating experience for visitors.
The prize website eulogized the structure, describing “galleries with walls made of colored glass that light up at night over the water of a reflecting pool.” It further elaborated that “This symbolic scenery amplifies the physical scenery of the Seto Inland Sea with a nod to the beauty of the Setouchi Islands.”
Ban expressed his gratitude for the recognition, attributing the win to the project’s innovative approach. “I believe the innovative approach, such as the mobile gallery floating on water and the wooden structure, was recognized. This was the first occasion I was given the chance to design freely, and I truly appreciate everyone involved,” he said in a statement.
What are the criteria used by the Prix Versailles to select the “World’s Most Beautiful Museums”?
