In a move common for Apple, the tech giant has discontinued sales of three older iPhone models – the iPhone SE (3rd generation), iPhone 14, and iPhone 14 Plus – as it focuses on its latest offerings in the iPhone 16 series. The iPhone 16e, launched earlier this year, takes the place of the iPhone SE in Apple’s lineup.
These older models, released in 2022, have been phased out as Apple routinely streamlines its product range after launching new generations.
Instead of the expected iPhone SE 4, rumors proved accurate with the release of the iPhone 16e, marking a change in naming conventions for Apple’s more affordable iPhone models.
iPhone 16e: A budget-Friendly Upgrade
Apple’s decision to discontinue the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus might surprise some, but the timing isn’t entirely unexpected. The latest pricing for both models before being discontinued started at $599, a point directly mirrored by the new iPhone 16e. However, the 16e boasts several notable upgrades compared to the three-year-old iPhone 14, including the powerful A18 chip with Apple Intelligence support, the company’s own C1 modem, and the latest USB-C port.
While both devices feature the same screen size, the iPhone 16e simplifies the rear camera setup with a single lens.
finding the Retired iPhones
For users seeking the nostalgic button-based Touch ID and compact form factor of the iPhone SE (3rd generation), finding one may be possible through third-party retailers. Though, stocks are likely to be scarce and dwindling.
The iPhone 16e becomes the most affordable iPhone in the current lineup, starting at $599 for the 128GB variant. This price point represents an increase from the iPhone SE (3rd generation)’s launch price of $429.
looking Ahead: The Future of iPhone Sales
Currently, Apple’s official websites and stores showcase the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 16e, iPhone 15, and iPhone 15 Plus.
It’s highly probable that Apple will discontinue sales of the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 plus following the launch of the next-generation iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max scheduled for September this year.
What factors went into Apple’s decision to discontinue the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus models in favor of the iPhone 16e?
