China Develops Innovative Air-ground Drone for Mars exploration

Chinese researchers are pioneering a new approach to Mars exploration with the development of a lightweight, dual-purpose drone. This unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), designed for both air and ground mobility, represents a important step forward in robotic exploration capabilities.

How the Drone Operates

The drone’s unique design allows it to adapt to different terrains and mission requirements.Zhu Yimin, a Ph.D. candidate at SoA,explained the ground movement: “On the ground,it mainly rolls by shifting its center of gravity.” This rolling motion minimizes energy consumption,a crucial factor for extended missions.

In the air, the drone utilizes an innovative rotor system. “In the air, it relies on a pair of contra-rotating coaxial rotors, controlled by a steering engine to adjust the forward direction, to control torque and force, ultimately achieving stable flight,” Zhu said.

Potential Applications on Mars

The drone’s ability to take off at any time, traverse obstacles, and maintain superb endurance makes it ideal for various Martian tasks. According to Zhang Lixian, a professor at SoA, the goal is for this aerial vehicle to demonstrate its “long endurance and observational abilities on Mars.”

Beyond surface exploration,the researchers envision applications in other challenging environments. “Our second goal is for such machines to be suitable for construction in many underground spaces and for exploring unknown underground spaces. We also need robotic means for inspection and environmental detection. We have now materialized all these functions,” said Zhang.

comparison to NASA’s Ingenuity

This Chinese drone project offers a contrasting approach to NASA’s Ingenuity Mars helicopter, which concluded its mission in January 2024. Ingenuity made history with 72 flights over nearly three years, demonstrating the feasibility of aerial exploration on Mars. Ingenuity first lifted off the Martian surface on April 19, 2021, and made its last flight on Jan. 18, 2024. On Flight 72, rotor blades on the craft were damaged during landing, permanently grounding the vehicle.

While Ingenuity proved the concept, the new Chinese drone aims to improve upon it with its dual-mode capabilities and lightweight design. NASA’s Ingenuity weighed 4 pounds on earth (1.81 kilograms), which is equivalent to 1.5 pounds (0.68 kg) on Mars.
