In a significant growth that underscores the strengthening ties between India and Qatar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amir of qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani elevated bilateral relations to a strategic partnership on February 18, 2025.

The decision to elevate the partnership was reached during delegation-level talks held at Hyderabad House in New Delhi. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that this marks a “new milestone” for the “special” bilateral relationship.

Delegation Talks and Memorandums of Understanding

The talks witnessed the participation of senior Indian government officials, including Union Ministers Hardeep Puri, Piyush Goyal, Nirmala Sitharaman, Mansukh Mandaviya, and PK Mishra. The two countries also exchanged several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) focused on areas like trade, technology, and investment.

A Holistic Framework for Cooperation

The strategic partnership agreement aims to foster closer cooperation in a wide range of sectors, including trade, energy, investments, innovation, technology, food security, culture, and people-to-people ties. A key milestone in the economic partnership was the signing of a revised agreement for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion. This agreement is a crucial step towards establishing a comprehensive free trade agreement (FTA) between India and Qatar.

prime Minister Modi extended a rare gesture of welcome by personally receiving the Amir of Qatar at Delhi Airport. This was followed by a ceremonial guard of honour at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, where President Droupadi Murmu welcomed the visiting leader.

“This visit will provide further momentum to our growing multifaceted partnership,” stated the MEA. Sheikh tamim Bin Hamad al-Thani’s two-day visit to India comes at the invitation of prime Minister Modi and builds upon the strong historical ties between the two nations.

“The Indian community residing in Qatar forms the largest expatriate community of Qatar,and is appreciated for its positive contribution in the progress and development of Qatar,” said the MEA.
