India is strategically increasing its global presence by opening new diplomatic missions worldwide, aiming to support its expanding diaspora and enhance its international influence.
A New Wave of Diplomatic Expansion
NEW DELHI – Recognizing the importance of a robust diplomatic network, India has substantially increased its efforts to establish new consulates and embassies across the globe. This initiative aims to cater to the needs of the growing Indian diaspora and project India’s influence on the world stage. In the last seven months, missions have been established across Europe, asia, and Latin America.
On March 8, 2025, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar inaugurated a new consulate in Belfast, Northern Ireland, marking a notable step in this expansion. The Belfast consulate is intended to solidify business connections and cater to the needs of the growing Indian community in the region.
“It made sense after we came back into government to move early to set up consulates,”
S. Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister
Dr. Jaishankar further emphasized the dual purpose of the Belfast mission:
“We do see the economic potential… But, at the same time, we do want it to be very much at the service of the Indian community.”

This sentiment resonates with the broader strategy of leveraging the diaspora as a vital link to India’s economic and cultural interests.

Interview: Ambassador Priya Sharma on India’s diplomatic Expansion
Archyde: ambassador Sharma, thank you for joining us today. India is clearly making significant moves in expanding its diplomatic footprint. Can you elaborate on the core strategy behind this initiative, and how the Indian diaspora plays a role?
Ambassador Sharma: Thank you for having me. The expansion of our diplomatic network is multifaceted.it is driven by a need to strengthen our connections with the Indian diaspora, offering them better consular services and fostering stronger economic and cultural ties. The diaspora is a vital bridge, and these new missions are crucial to maintaining that connection and promoting India’s interests abroad.
Diaspora as a Diplomatic Asset
Archyde: From what we understand, the United States has a well-developed Indian diaspora. Can you speak to the role of the diaspora in influencing foreign policy? How does India leverage its diaspora communities in countries like the US?
Ambassador Sharma: Absolutely. The Indian diaspora in the US, for example, has grown into a significant element in our foreign policy.Their expertise, their business connections, their cultural insights – all of this is valuable. We actively engage with diaspora organizations, consult on policy matters, and encourage their participation in promoting trade, investment, and cultural exchange. We aim to create a mutually beneficial relationship, where the diaspora thrives while also contributing to India’s growth.
Expanding Horizons: New Consulates and Missions
Archyde: With new consulates opening in places like Belfast, the geographic reach is expanding. What are the specific objectives of these new missions, and how do they address the needs of the local Indian communities?
Ambassador Sharma: The new missions are strategically located to serve the needs of a growing diaspora and seize economic opportunities. In belfast, for instance, the consulate aims to solidify business connections and offer support services in the region. The objective is to make it easier for the Indian community to thrive, whether it’s visa services, assistance with business ventures, or simply a sense of connection to their homeland. These expansions also reflect India’s growing global presence and influence.
Looking Ahead: Future Plans and Community Engagement
Archyde: What are the long-term goals for these diplomatic expansions, and how does the Indian government plan to ensure active community engagement in the future?
Ambassador Sharma: Our long-term goals involve building a robust network that supports a growing Indian diaspora, promotes trade, and enhances India’s global standing. Future plans include establishing more missions in strategically crucial regions and increasing digital outreach. Community engagement will be a key focus. We intend to foster even more connections by supporting cultural events, economic forums, and regular dialogues so that we can understand and address the changing needs of our citizens abroad.
