Interview: Inside Belga Food Store, the New Game changer in Ghent’s Culinary Scene
Ghent’s latest wholesale food supplier, Belga Food Store, has caused quite a stir in the city’s burgeoning food scene. We sat down with the store’s owner, Vepa Rejepov, to discuss the new venture and its unique approach to catering to both businesses and individuals.
An Accessible Food Hub for all
Archyde (A): Belga Food Store stands out by welcoming both businesses and individuals, unlike conventional wholesale suppliers. What inspired this customer-focused approach?
Vepa Rejepov (VR): I’ve always believed that quality ingredients should be accessible to everyone, not just confined to professional kitchens. By opening our doors to all, we’re not only serving the hospitality industry but also Ghent’s home cooks, encouraging them to explore and experiment with our diverse range of products.
A Frozen Treasure Trove
A: Your store boasts an notable selection of frozen goods. How did you curate this range, and are there any customer favorites so far?
VR: We wanted to offer a wide variety of high-quality frozen products that suit both professional and home cooking needs. Our pies and ready meals have been flying off the shelves, but I’m notably proud of our artisanal frozen cheeses and unusual frozen flowers, which add a unique touch to dishes.
Sustainability and the Future
A: With sustainability being a hot topic in foodservice, what steps is Belga Food Store taking to contribute to Ghent’s green initiatives?
VR: We’re committed to reducing our environmental impact. We source locally where possible, use eco-friendly packaging, and have implemented a returns system for our reusable crates. In the future, we hope to introduce more vegetarian and vegan options as part of our dedication to sustainable and responsible dining.
Thoughts from the Owner
A: What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs looking to break into the food industry, and what can we expect from Belga Food Store in the coming years?
VR: My advice would be to understand your customer and provide them with what they truly need. For us, that means continuing to expand our product range, improving our online shopping experience, and perhaps even opening more stores across Belgium. watch this space!
