iPadOS has for some time now allowed you to write directly on the iPad screen using Apple Pencil or other digital pencils.
From the iPadOS 18Apple is now allowing you to copy text from a web page, document or email and paste it as a manuscript, in your own handwriting.
Cool, right? See how simple it is!
Compatibility
According to Apple, this function can be used on the following iPad models:
- iPad (10th generation)
- iPad mini (6th generation or newer)
- iPad Air (4th generation or newer)
- iPad Pro the 11″ (3rd generation or later)
- iPad Pro the 12.9″ (5th generation or later)
Furthermore, it is only present in the following languages — which, fortunately, includes ours:
- English (South Africa, Australia, Canada, United States, India, Ireland, New Zealand, United Kingdom and Singapore)
- French (Belgium, Canada, France and Switzerland)
- German (Austria, Germany and Switzerland)
- Italian (Italy and Switzerland)
- Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal)
- Spanish (Latin America, Mexico and Spain)
How to use
After copying text, open the Notes app (Notes) and go to the one where there is a handwritten note of yours. Then, stick it next to it to watch the magic happen — as long as you do it using the Apple Pencil.
According to Apple, you can even paste it in the middle of a paragraph, just like you would with typed text, and all your handwritten notes will fit on the page!
It’s worth noting that the more you write by hand, the more the system will learn what your real handwriting looks like.

**Host:** Welcome back to Tech Talk, everyone! Today, we’re diving into a fascinating update from Apple that’s sure to excite iPad users who love the feel of pen and paper. Joining us to discuss this exciting new feature is tech journalist Sarah Miller. Sarah, welcome to the show!
**Sarah:** Thanks for having me!
**Host:** So, Sarah, we’ve heard whispers about iPadOS 18 bringing a cool new handwriting feature. Can you tell our viewers what it’s all about?
**Sarah:** Absolutely! Apple has unveiled a nifty feature called “Smart Script.” Basically, it lets you paste copied text, whether from a website, document, or email, directly into your handwritten notes as if you had written it yourself.
**Host:** That sounds incredibly useful! Imagine copying a quote you love from a website and seamlessly integrating it into your handwritten journal. Tell us, how does this magic work?
**Sarah:** The magic lies in Apple Pencil integration. Once you copy the text, you open the Notes app and navigate to a note containing your handwritten content. Simply paste the copied text near your handwriting, and “Smart Script” kicks in, replicating your writing style as it converts the digital text into a handwritten-looking format. Pretty ingenious, right?
**Host:** Absolutely! Now, this sounds amazing, but are there any limitations we should be aware of?
**Sarah:** Well, it’s important to note that not all iPads can enjoy this feature. You’ll need an iPad (10th generation) or later, iPad mini (6th generation or newer), iPad Air (4th generation or newer), or any iPad Pro released from the 3rd generation onwards. Plus, at the moment, it only supports certain languages, including English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.
**Host:** Understood. Thank you for clarifying that. It’s great to see Apple continually innovating and bringing such user-friendly features to the iPad. Sarah, any final thoughts for our viewers?
**Sarah:** This “Smart Script” feature demonstrates Apple’s commitment to making digital note-taking feel more personalized and natural. If you’re an iPad user who appreciates the tactile experience of handwriting, keep an eye out for iPadOS 18. It’s definitely worth checking out!
**Host:** Fantastic! Thanks for sharing your insights, Sarah. And to our viewers, thank you for tuning in to Tech Talk.
