Housing manufacturers on housing starts: Never measured so low

The latest twelve-month period is 15 per cent below the previous period and the lowest measured since they started their measurements in 1999, according to the Boligproduserenes Association.

Far fewer homes are being built than are needed, according to managing director Lars Jacob Hiim.

– The low level of construction activity is serious for the housing supply and has long-term consequences for those who need a home. In addition, the industry is downsizing and losing expertise, which will take time to build up again, says Hiim.

So far this year, construction has started on 9,636 housing units, which is 5 per cent lower than at the same time last year.

Sales of housing are still low, but have increased somewhat. In October, sales are 21 per cent above the same month last year. So far this year, 14 per cent more homes have been sold than in the same period in 2023.

In the last twelve months, sales have increased by 8 per cent from the previous twelve-month period.

Hiim has clear expectations that the governing parties Ap and Sp will find measures in the negotiations with SV on the state budget.

– Increased framework for the Housing Bank’s scheme for housing quality must be prioritized, says Hiim.

The lending regulations must also become more flexible, he believes.
