Salaries See Mixed Results: Quarter-Over-Quarter Dip Despite Annual Gains

The average salary across the country reached BGN 2,275 in the third quarter, reflecting a 13.8% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. However, this figure represents a 0.9% dip compared to the second quarter of the current year. While the number of employed individuals decreased by 1% from the second quarter, a 1.2% growth was noted on an annual basis. This data was released in the November newsletter focused on living standards, issued by the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy.

Sectoral Salary Disparities

The private sector saw an average salary of BGN 2,256 in the third quarter, falling short of the BGN 2,331 reported in the public sector.

Highest and Lowest Earners

The “Creation and distribution of information and creative products, telecommunications” sector boasted the highest average salary in the third quarter, reaching BGN 5,127, marking a 9.8% increase year-on-year. The state administration followed closely with an average remuneration of BGN 2,671, representing a 10.8% annual growth.

In contrast, the “Hotel and restaurant industry” reported the lowest average salary at BGN 1,495, despite experiencing a significant year-on-year growth exceeding 18%.

Regional Salary Variation

Sofia-city emerged as the region with the highest average salary, reaching BGN 3,100 during the third quarter—36% higher than the national average. Conversely, Smolyan recorded the lowest average salary at BGN 1,524, representing approximately 67% of the national average. Blagoevgrad, Vidin, Kyustendil, and Silistra also reported average salaries below BGN 1,600.
