Pedro Ortiz Pérez, a vibrant 16-year-old of Mexican descent, was fatally wounded in a shooting on May 3, 2024. The following day,May 4,he was declared brain dead. Though,in the face of immense grief,Pedro’s family honored his previously expressed wish to be an organ donor, giving seven individuals a second chance at life.

According to the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA), over 100,000 people are currently waiting for an organ transplant. Every nine minutes, another person is added to the waiting list. The events leading to Pedro’s death unfolded on May 3, 2024, at North Asheboro Park. He “was the victim of a tragic shooting” allegedly perpetrated by a “former friend,” according to initial reports. The bullets caused severe damage, ultimately leading to Pedro’s death.

Amidst the sorrow, Pedro’s mother, María Guadalupe Pérez Pacheco, known as Lupita, found solace in her son’s final act of generosity. Lupita, originally from Guanajuato,Mexico, shared with Que Pasa Media the circumstances surrounding Pedro’s decision to become an organ donor. Before the tragic incident, Pedro had applied for his driver’s license and, when asked about organ donation, “Without hesitation, Pedro responded affirmatively, and that decision would save lives.” This simple act of saying “yes” on a DMV form rippled outwards, touching lives across the country.
