Hathras Professor Accused of Sexual Assault: Students’ Allegations and Emergence of Obscene Videos

A chief proctor at a college in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras has been accused of sexual exploitation by several female students. The proctor, identified as Rajneesh Kumar, heads the Geography Department at PC Bagla College in Hathras.

The UP Police registered a case against him under multiple sections, including rape. The incident came to light after several female students sent anonymous complaints to local police and the National Commission for Women (NCW).

In their complaint, the students accused Rajneesh Kumar of sexual exploitation. They also shared photographs allegedly showing the chief proctor in objectionable positions with some students.

A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) conducted a preliminary investigation, verifying the allegations by speaking with the students visible in the photographs.

The Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) further examined the case and confirmed the authenticity of the accusations. Following the investigation report, the police registered an FIR and initiated legal proceedings against Rajneesh.

Videos of the proctor sexually assaulting students of the college are now going viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage. Reports claimed that he has been sexually assaulting girls for the past 20 years.

Earlier also an FIR was reportedly lodged against him, but he was proved innocent. The professor used to call the girls to his office or bungalow and lure them with the promise of good grades in exams or giving them jobs. He reportedly also filmed videos and blackmailed the students to keep them silent.

The videos and photographs are now going viral on social media with people demanding strict action against him.

“If these allegations are true, then it is extremely shameful and reprehensible. Such incidents kept happening for 20 years and the administration remained silent – this shows the failure of the system. Strict action should be taken against the culprits, so that the safety of daughters can be ensured,” a user wrote on X.

Another user wrote, “A person with such a bad and cruel mentality has no right to remain a teacher. The department and administration should tell the public what action they have taken in this matter till now, because such an act can spoil the school as well as the society, so that our young generation does not have a negative attitude towards education.”

Hathras College Scandal: An Expert’s Take on Sexual Exploitation Allegations

Investigating the PC Bagla College Case: A Conversation with Dr. Anita Desai

the recent allegations of sexual exploitation against a chief proctor at PC Bagla College in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, have sent shockwaves through the academic community. To gain deeper insights into this disturbing case, Archyde news spoke with dr. Anita Desai, a leading expert in educational policy and violence against women in academia.

Understanding the Scope of the Problem

Archyde News: Dr. Desai, thank you for joining us. this situation at PC Bagla College is horrific. Can you put this incident into context within the larger landscape of sexual harassment and exploitation in Indian academic institutions?

Dr. Anita Desai: Thank you for having me. Sadly, what we are seeing at PC Bagla College isn’t an isolated incident. Sexual harassment and exploitation, unfortunately, remain a persistent problem within many Indian academic institutions. Power dynamics, a lack of robust reporting mechanisms, and a culture of silence frequently enough contribute to underreporting and impunity. This case highlights the urgent need for systemic reforms and a shift in institutional culture to prioritize student safety and well-being.

Analyzing the Systemic Failures

Archyde News: Reports suggest this alleged misconduct has been ongoing for two decades, with previous FIRs failing to lead to conviction. what does this say about the systems in place designed to protect students?

Dr. Anita Desai: The fact that these allegations span twenty years points to a severe systemic failure. It suggests that previous complaints may have been mishandled, investigations were inadequate,or that pressure was brought to bear on the victims. It also suggests a possible culture of enabling behavior within the college administration. A thorough independent inquiry that looks beyond the current case is crucial to identifying and addressing these systemic weaknesses.

The Role of Social Media and Public Outrage

Archyde News: Videos and photographs have gone viral on social media, amplifying public outrage. How can this public pressure be channeled constructively to ensure justice for the victims?

Dr. Anita Desai: Social media can be a powerful tool for raising awareness and holding institutions accountable. However, it’s crucial to ensure the privacy and safety of the victims. Constructive action would involve demanding transparent and impartial investigations, advocating for stronger policies against sexual harassment and exploitation, and supporting organizations that provide legal and psychological assistance to survivors. It’s essential to translate online outrage into offline action through advocating for policy changes and supporting survivor resources.

Preventing Future Incidents of Sexual Exploitation

Archyde News: What concrete steps can colleges and universities take to prevent such incidents from happening in the future? What legal and policy changes are needed?

Dr. Anita Desai: Several steps are critical. First, implement robust and confidential reporting mechanisms that empower students to come forward without fear of retaliation.Second, conduct regular training for faculty and staff on sexual harassment prevention and response. Third, establish an independent body to investigate allegations impartially.Fourth, revise policies and procedures to ensure swift and appropriate disciplinary action against perpetrators. Legally, strict enforcement of existing laws and potentially the creation of specific legislation addressing sexual exploitation in educational settings may also be necesssary. Also, transparent feedback systems can improve confidence among students that proper action is taken.

A Thought-Provoking Question

Archyde News: Dr.desai, given the ingrained power dynamics within academic institutions, what innovative approaches can we employ to truly empower students to speak out and break the culture of silence surrounding sexual exploitation allegations? How can the student body organize and be a part of the checks and balances?

Dr. Anita Desai: That’s a crucial question. One approach is to foster student-led initiatives, empowering students to create safe spaces and support networks. Another involves integrating mandatory ethics training into the curriculum, teaching students about their rights and responsibilities. Mental health resources should also be readily available. Additionally, promoting student representation on college boards and committees can ensure their voices are heard in policy-making decisions relating to safety and wellbeing. This case calls for complete transparency.

Archyde News: Dr. Desai, thank you for sharing your expertise and insights with us. It’s clear that systemic change is needed to protect students and ensure accountability in academic institutions.

Dr. Anita Desai: My pleasure. Thank you for bringing attention to this critically important issue.
