Great Lakes Region Digs Out from Blizzard as Another Storm Looms
Residents of the Great Lakes region are finally catching their breath after a punishing winter storm dumped over a foot of snow on parts of the area, but officials warn a new system is brewing and threatens to bring even more accumulation in the coming days.
While cleanup efforts are largely complete in some areas, many school districts in western Pennsylvania remained closed Tuesday as the storm that blanketed the region finally began to weaken. Parts of western New York, Ohio, and Michigan, which have received over a foot of snow in the past five days, were also grappling with the aftermath. By Monday, more than 5 feet of snow had piled up east of Lake Ontario.
“Crews are making great progress in keeping roads open,” a spokesman for the state department of transportation said. “Most travel restrictions have been lifted this morning. However, we urge everyone to drive cautiously and slow down.”
But even as residents struggle to recover from the recent snowfall, the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for parts of western Pennsylvania, warning that a new storm could dump 3 to 9 inches of snow between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning.
Deadly Crashes Linked to Snow
Heavy snowfall has been blamed for a number of fatal accidents, including a horrific crash in Iowa on Monday morning. According to the Iowa State Patrol, a driver attempted to overtake a snowplow and collided with another vehicle, resulting in a loss of life.
