Archyde News Editor, Liam O’Connell, caught up with jockey Patrick Mullins to discuss his stunning victory at the 2024 Randox Grand National, riding Nick Rockett to a historic win for trainer Willie Mullins.
Q&A with Patrick Mullins
Liam O’Connell: Patrick, congratulations on an astonishing victory! The Grand National is such a demanding race. Can you take us through your experience aboard Nick Rockett?
Patrick Mullins: Thanks,Liam. It was an remarkable day. nick Rockett jumped fantastically. Early on, I found myself further forward then I’d planned. I had to rein him in, and I was a little worried at the Canal Turn that I’d lost to much ground. But he just kept jumping so well. Getting to the front near the end was exhilarating.
Liam O’Connell: Your father, Willie Mullins, had an unprecedented one-two-three finish. What was the feeling like, knowing stablemates were right behind you?
Patrick Mullins: It was incredible, Liam, to be honest.What a performance from the whole team – Willie, the other jockeys, and all the crew at home. To cross the finish line, and see Grangeclare West and I Am Maximus in close pursuit was just surreal. it shows the caliber of horse we had and the top draw training from my father.He’s an absolute genius.
Liam O’Connell: this win carries significant personal weight,given your family’s history. Can you elaborate on that?
Patrick Mullins: Absolutely. As a kid, I was fascinated by the Grand National. I read all the books, watched all the videos. My cousins David and Emmet have already won it, so I was determined. To add my name to that list, it’s a dream come true. I’m level with them now, and (cousin) Danny will have to pull his finger out now (laughs).
Liam O’Connell: What was the turning point of the race for you and Nick Rockett?
Patrick Mullins: He was jumping so well from the start. I could feel his heart. I’d say the last few fences were very vital. Where he showed how tough he was, his stamina, his heart… I knew that if we got those last jumps, we’d be in with a great shout of winning.
liam O’Connell: The win also held significant emotional meaning for owner Stewart Andrew. How does that add to the moment?
Patrick Mullins: It was particularly poignant. stewart, losing Sadie… The horse has the heart of a lion. It was an immensely touching victory and I was so pleased for Stewart. He deserves this.
Liam O’Connell: Looking ahead, what are your immediate plans and aspirations?
Patrick Mullins: Well, I’ll be enjoying this moment for sure! But, we’ll be back, of course, to try and keep winning races.We’re already planning our next move and will continue to compete. The Grand National is a truly special event, and a victory like this inspires us all.
