Community Celebrates Opening of Goulais River Fitness Center
New Facility Fills a Long-Standing Need for Local Residents
Owned by husband-and-wife duo Brian and Jessie Dickson, the Goulais River Fitness Center officially opened its doors on Nov. 1, marking a significant milestone for the community. In a recent interview, Brian described how the gym‘s creation was driven by a long-standing need in the area.
A Community in Need
“We surveyed a cross-section of over 2,000 local residents, and they confirmed that there was a need in the community for a fitness centre. Nearly 50% of respondents said they would sign up as soon as possible and felt our community would benefit from a local fitness centre,” Brian explained.
Brian is a registered nurse at Sault Area Hospital while Jessie works full-time at the gym. Together, they make a strong team dedicated to promoting health and wellness in Goulais River.
A Welcoming Environment for Everyone
Jessie, a lifelong resident of Goulais River, expressed an emotional connection to the project. “This community needed something like this. We’ve been waiting for years, and watching people come in and push themselves, better themselves – it makes us happy.”
Jessie, who enjoys staying active through cardio, weights, and a passion for CrossFit, acknowledged the gym’s appeal to people of all fitness levels. “There has never been a gym out here, and all our members are excited about it.”
The facility is staffed from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday, but year-round 24/7 access for fitness enthusiasts is available to members through their key fobs. Jessie noted that this feature has been a strong draw for shift workers.
“We see consistent member usage in the early morning from 4 to 6 a.m. and also evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. so the flexibility is really appreciated.”
More Than Just Weights and Cardio Machines
In addition to memberships—the center already has over 30 members
—the gym offers a variety of fitness classes and even personalized training sessions.
Describing the atmosphere as a “non-judgmental and supportive atmosphere, and a bright, inspiring facility,” Brian emphasizes the welcoming environment.
He combines his seasoned experience as a fitness enthusiast, having collaborated with various trainers throughout his life, with his dedication to community wellness accomplished through his work as a registered nurse and former firefighter by Brian stated. His passion for helping people is evident in his approach to the gym.
Jessie, with her lifelong passion for sports, adds to this positive foundation. As an experienced cheerleading and dance coach, she brings her enthusiasm for fitness and her dedication to helping individuals reach their full potential.

The gym offers a variety of strength training equipment, including an overhead press, shoulder press, leg extension, leg curl, lay pulldown machines, squat cages with Olympic bars and plates, and the gym’s comprehensive offerings are further enhanced by a full range of dumbbells, kettlebells, medicine balls, and slam balls.
In addition, members can enjoy the benefits of tanning beds and a sauna. First Aid is also prioritized, with a kit readily available on site for emergencies. Video cameras constantly monitor the premises for safety and security.
“Life had different plans and the location fell through at that time,” Explains Brian, “Then we were presented with an opportunity to lease our current space. We strongly believe it allows us much more to offer our customers than our original plan. This is our first joint business venture, and the community as well as our landlords have been so incredibly supportive in getting this off the ground and opening the doors.”
Located at 2771 Highway 17 North, the fitness center shares the property with other popular destinations such as Pine Shores IDA Drug Mart, Castle Building Centre, and Country Kitchen.

## New Fitness Center a Hit in Goulais River
**Today we’re joined by Brian Dickson, co-owner of the brand new Goulais River Fitness Center. Brian, welcome!**
**Brian:** Thanks for having me!
**Congratulations on the successful opening of the Center on November 1st. It seems it’s already making a big impact on the community. What inspired you and your wife Jessie to start this project?**
**Brian:** Well, we really saw a need in Goulais River. We surveyed over 2,000 residents, and almost half said they’d sign up for a local fitness center immediately. There was clearly a desire for a place to get healthy and stay active right here in our town.
**Jessie grew up here and always wanted to see a gym in the community right?**
**Brian:** Exactly. She’s incredibly passionate about fitness and seeing this dream come to life has been really rewarding for both of us.
**The Center isn’t just a gym with weights and cardio machines, is it? You’ve got classes and personal training offered too?**
**Brian:** That’s right! We wanted to create a space that caters to everyone, regardless of their fitness level. We have a variety of classes to choose from, and Jessie offers personalized training sessions as well.
**That’s great! And the fact that you’re open 24/7 for members is a huge draw, especially for those working shifts. How has the community response been?**
**Brian:** It’s been phenomenal. We already have over 30 members, and we see people using the gym early in the morning and late at night. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. People love the welcoming atmosphere and the flexibility of the 24/7 access. [[1](https://www.bplans.com/start-a-business/industries/gym-fitness-center/)]
