The detention is a direct result of the house search conducted this morning by the Central Investigative Prosecutor’s Office (KNYF) at the Óbuda city hall as part of its ongoing investigation into alleged bribery and other offenses. According to the announcement of the investigating prosecutor general’s office, several individuals are being investigated for corruption offenses.
On Tuesday morning, at multiple locations – including the district municipality – procedural acts are or have been ongoing. The authority is expected to provide more detailed information on the case on Wednesday.
Gergő Czeglédy is not the first case
A similar case occurred at the beginning of March: Gábor P. and two of his associates were arrested for thirty days, the charge concerns a company that has become a front for fictitious contracts, bribes, and corruption, among other issues. In a 2022 audio recording, Gábor P. talks about how Sándor Szaniszló (Democratic Coalition) offered free housing in the 18th district to the mayor.
The arrest of Gábor P. may also be uncomfortable for those involved, because, due to his position, he might have knowledge of many suspicious transactions in the III., XVIII., and XIX. districts.
Gábor P. was previously the chief of staff and confidant of Kispest Mayor Péter Gajda (MSZP), and in 2020, he became a close ally of Sándor Szaniszló after he left the XIX. district city hall.
