On the night of November 29, a balloon with a fuse fell in the Las Violetas sector, in the Belén neighborhood, causing a fire in a wooded area that quickly fueled the flames.
This incident was the first fire of the year associated with December customs. According to Carlos Quintero, director of the DAGRD, “the fire affected a warehouse with stored styrofoam and damaged three vehicles that were in a nearby parking lot.”
The authorities called on citizens to avoid dangerous festive traditions, such as the use of gunpowder or risky practices with candles, including the well-known “devil’s candle.”
“In this holiday season let us remember not to launch balloons with glowing fuses, not to use gunpowder, to take care of our minors at all times, remember that disaster risk management is everyone’s responsibility,” said the director of the DAGRD.
During the emergency presented on Friday the 29th, several Medellín fire units assisted to mitigate the damage already caused by the fuse balloon, positioning itself as the first fire caused by this type of holiday activities.
Additionally, the authorities urge the community to report the misuse of this type of devices and reiterate the care that family members must take with minors, who do not usually measure the consequences of their use.
