A Conversation with Liva Petersone-Klavina: Navigating the Latvian Music Industry
Archyde’s Elina Straume sits down with liva Petersone-Klavina, winner of “Year’s Manager or Management Company” at the 2024 Gamma Awards, to discuss the evolving landscape of the Latvian music scene and the secrets to successful artist management.
The Gamma Awards: recognizing excellence in Latvian Music
Elina Straume: Liva, congratulations on winning “Year’s Manager or Management Company” at the Gamma Awards! How does it feel to be recognized for your contributions to the Latvian music industry?
Liva Petersone-Klavina: Thank you, Elina! It’s an incredible honor. The Gamma Awards are a fantastic initiative by LaIPA, realy shining a spotlight on all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes. It’s validating for my team and me, knowing our efforts supporting Latvian artists are being seen and appreciated.
Behind the Scenes of Success: Artist Management in Latvia
Elina Straume: Can you give us a peek into what a typical day looks like for you as a music manager in Latvia? It’s often seen as a glamorous job, but the reality must be quite different.
Liva Petersone-Klavina: (Laughs) Glamorous is definitely a perspective! A typical day is a whirlwind of activity. It could involve anything from negotiating contracts, coordinating tour logistics, strategizing marketing campaigns with record labels like baltic Groove Orchestra, resolving artist issues, or even just brainstorming creative ideas. It’s about being a problem-solver, a diplomat, and a cheerleader all rolled into one. The focus is always on enabling the artist to focus on thier music.
The impact of the Gamma Awards on the Latvian Music Scene
Elina Straume: The gamma Awards are a relatively new initiative. What impact do you think they’ll have on the future of the Latvian music industry?
Liva Petersone-Klavina: I think they’re going to be hugely impactful. The level of recognition across diverse genres – from Pop to hip-Hop to Metal – encourages artists to continue pushing creative boundaries. And the inclusion of industry professionals in the awards process fosters a sense of community and collaboration that’s vital for growth. The fact that nearly 200 jury members, including international voices from Lithuania and Estonia, were involved speaks volumes about its credibility.
Navigating the Digital Landscape: Streaming and Radio Hits
elina Straume: We’ve seen a rise in digital platforms. Chris Noah winning “Radio Hit of the year” for “Awake” and “Narnia” by Eggs, Esmeralda, and Heywhatkid taking “most Streaming Song of the Year” shows a split in how music is consumed. How has this shift affected your approach to artist management?
Liva Petersone-Klavina: It’s drastically changed the game. We need to be incredibly savvy about online marketing, social media engagement, and data analytics. Understanding streaming algorithms is crucial. While radio play is still important, especially for certain demographics, building an online presence and connecting with fans directly through platforms like Instagram is paramount to success. it’s about crafting a cohesive digital strategy that complements the artist’s overall brand.
