Today, DiCarlo finds inspiration on Instagram, following artists like Mark Williams, Kara Voorhees Reynolds, M’ria Swire, Zinsky, and alpay Efe. He explains, “I’ve learned a lot from looking at their work and videos.”

Advice for Budding Artists: Create, Create, Create

DiCarlo’s advice for aspiring artists is simple: “Create like crazy.” He emphasizes the importance of focusing on personal growth rather than comparing oneself to others.”I think the hardest part in the beginning for me was comparing myself to other artists. But once I had a crazy amount of work I could really compare my new pieces to my old ones and could really appreciate how far along I have come. So now I only compare myself to where I was yesterday.”

Early Inspirations & Comic Book Roots

Archyde news: Joseph, your journey started with mini-comics inspired by the X-Men. How did that early passion for comic books influence your current art style?

Joseph DiCarlo: Absolutely! Those early X-Men comics were everything. The dynamism, the luminous colors, the storytelling – it all seeped into my artistic DNA. You can still see that energy and love for vibrant color in my work today.

From Illustration to Painting

Archyde News: You initially leaned towards illustration after publishing “The ABCs Of Being A Pirate,” but then painting took over.What sparked that shift?

Joseph DiCarlo: Good question! I thoght at the time I wanted to become an illustrator, but my love for painting quickly took over. It was the tactile nature of it, the freedom to experiment with textures and layers… painting just felt like the right fit.

Influential Artists & Instagram Discoveries

Archyde News: You’ve mentioned salvador Dali and Todd McFarlane as important influences. How did their work impact your artistic progress?

Joseph DiCarlo: Classic wise Salvador Dali, once I saw his larger masterwork pieces I was hooked. he made me see you can really do anything in art. McFarlane,his art style elevated the comic to new heights and the life he gave to Spidey’s webs was amazing (pun intended). And now Instagram is a constant source of inspiration – artists like Mark Williams, Kara Voorhees Reynolds, and M’ria Swire are constantly pushing boundaries.
